    Capitol Limited WAS - CHI

We were recently on the Capitol Limited, and our SCA was Carlos, too. He was amazing. In fact, he was one of the two best SCAs we've ever had!

Is having no chef on the CONO permanent?

Thanks, Yarrow. I hope they evaluate it before January. Two of our group will be having their first Amtrak experience, and if it is like the experiences I've read here, it may be their last. I will surely call Customer Relations if there is no chef. Has anyone who reserved when there was still...

Is having no chef on the CONO permanent?

I got my reservation for 3 bedrooms for a family group (paid, not AGR) for the first week of January before they announced the change, and I've not yet received any word of the change from Amtrak. I would not know about it at all if not for reading about it here. Does anyone know if it is a...

So sorry to hear this sad news. While I never met Patrick, I always enjoyed his posts, trip reports, and photos. My sincere condolences to Alice and family.

    1st Class Lounge Question

We came in 15 minutes early on the SWC on Tuesday, and were able to switch from the 6:00 Wolverine to the 4:00 Blue Water, but we did have to pay the $15.00 difference.

Does Anyone Know How to Get to the Detroit Airport

I'm hoping to get to the Detroit Metro Airport on the East-bound Wolverine. Is this possible, or am I dreaming? Does it entail a ridiculously expensive cab ride? Thanks for any info.

    "Zephyr" now an updated ebook

I bought the Kindle version of this book in April, when this thread first started, but made myself wait to read it until I was on the Empire Builder this month. It was worth the wait! I had not read the original from the mid-90s, so I especially enjoyed seeing the contrast of the Amtrak of the...

Has anyone been in the NOL station recently?

As said above, Hubby and son report that the Magnolia Room is closed and under construction. They also reported seeing alligators from the SSL...a fun change from the wildlife we typically see along the roadside here in Michigan!

Has anyone been in the NOL station recently?

Thanks for the info. They will be there today, so I'll let you know what they find.

Has anyone been in the NOL station recently?

Hubby and son will be at that station tomorrow. Is the renovation still underway? Is the Magnolia Room usable?

    "Zephyr" now an updated ebook

Just bought it for my Kindle. I'm going to try to wait til my upcoming EB trip to read it, because there's nothing better than reading about trains while riding a train, but I may not be able to wait!

    East LD trips from Michigan...

We've found the same problem, leaving from our home station, Kalamazoo. We've only gone east once, on the LSL, and when we did, we chose option 3, and backtracked to Chicago. Not a perfect solution, but, for us, the train trip is an important part of the vacation, and we are willing to spend the...

    Luggage Tags

I agree that it helps to have some unique marking on your bag. On our recent Texas Eagle trip, our red suitcase was missing from the sleeper car luggage rack when we got to San Antonio. SCA couldn't believe it, said he'd never seen that happen, but it did.

First Amtrak Trip: Three Weeks - Arizona to Boston

Add my thanks to your friends and relatives for making this trip possible for you, so that we could enjoy it vicariously through you! Seriously, the part about Boston makes me want to hop on the LSL right now and go do it all myself!

What kind of weather on EB in Mid-November?

Many thanks for your replies. Looks like I'll be cancelling that reservation (darn! $495 for a bedroom seemed like such a good deal!). Maybe the California Zephyr would be a better choice for that time of year.

What kind of weather on EB in Mid-November?

Found a great deal on AmSnag for the Empire Builder in bedroom E for mid-November. Hubby wasn't home to look at it, so, using the "book-it-first-and-ask-questions-later" philosophy, I snagged it. Now he's wondering what kind of weather we'd likely have on route and in Seattle that time of year...

Sleeping Car Attendant Hall of Fame?

Henry on the Southwest Chief was a great SCA. He welcomed us, and made sure we knew how to work everything in the roomette, he helped out in the dining car, and he was even in the Sightseer Lounge on the microphone giving a "travelogue". Hope we see him again on our next trip!

    cruise line discount?

Amtrak does offer a discount for NCL cruises. It can be applied to travel to and from the cruiseport. They will ask for your cruise booking number, and sometimes (not always) they ask to see your cruise ticket when you pick up your rail ticket to verify. The beauty of this discount is, it gives...
