Carbon footprint for various modes of transport

As I've written before, the most robust way to compare the modes of transportation would be to get recent figures on passenger miles traveled and fuel use, and then calculate fuel use for passenger mile. You then need to calculate the CO2 emissions per gallon of fuel or kWH (for electric...

    India passenger news

Let's not forget "Thurgood Marhsall BWI Airport Station," "Moynihan Train Hall," "Ronald Reagon National Airport," and a slew of other airports around the world named for people.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Pictures won't help. They look like it's tasty food, but a lot of that depends how it's reheated. Hint: They're supposed to be reheated in a convection oven, but sometimes a microwave is used, with disappointing results.

    Philadelphia Metropolitan Lounge access

You also have to go up stairs to get to the lounge in Boston. I think there's an elevator, but you need to have the redcap access it for you. Fortunately, the red caps are stationed right in front of the lounge entrance, and they will hold your bags securely if you don't want to haul them up...

    Northeast Regional discussion

If you really want to have seat on the Northeast Regional facing forward, all the business class seats in the 2x1 club-cafe business class seats face forward. These are found on the Vermonter, on the 65/66/67 overnight trains to Boston and on one of the Roanoke trains (151 southbound, not sure...

    Acela discussion

Amtrak already carries 75% of NY-WAS air+rail traffic, even with the current "slow" schedules. You'll never eliminate all NY-WAS air traffic, because some people are flying to make connecting flights, or maybe their final destination is near the airport. Where they need to speed up the service...

Container Ship strikes and collapses Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge

Sure, it's a possibility, but terrorists usually don't do things to "escape being noticed." Getting publicity for their cause is a more important objective. Even state actors who are doing such sabotage as legitimate acts of war, like the Ukrainians did with the Kerch Bridge, are quite open...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion 2024 H1

Actually, I find it hard to look out the windows when the bed is set up and I'm lying in it trying to sleep. The only exception is the roomette upper bunk in the Viewliners.

Amtrak announces Simplified Fares coming soon

They're very handy if you're taking a discretionary trip and you can't use your 12-hour upgrade coupon or there are no decent seats left on the departure. You can cancel without penalty and try booking for another day. I also had a situation recently where I accidentally booked the wrong day...

Acela 21 (Avelia Liberty) development, testing and deployment (2Q 2024)

I saw a trainst sitting in Ivy City on Wednesday.

    Is Amtrak greener than flying?

The journalist based his estimates on a bunch of computer models that aren't actually backed up by actual fuel consumption test data and that don't account for variability from trip to trip. Probably the most robust way to compare emissions by mode would be to take the total passenger miles of...

Can Private Railroads operate passenger service without government help?

Which is why for-profit private companies cannot run a useful passenger rail system. At best they can "skim the cream" off of a few routes, but that just makes the rest of the system financially unsustainable.

Container Ship strikes and collapses Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge

They could also put in barrier islands. See the Sunshine Skyway and the Commodore Barry Bridge.

So how are they going to handle the Lake Shore Limited?

Tracking FY 2024 Ridership and Finances

I think that commuting is recovering. Unfortunately, a lot more of it is being done by car, as I discovered this morning, driving around Suburban Washington. The train to Washington was not empty, but not jam packed, either. The MARC crowd at Baltimore Penn was bigger than 2 years ago...

Additional Service from New York/Philadelphia to Pennsylvania

By the time any of this service comes online, dual mode Airo trainsets should be available, so the lack of electrification beyond Lansdale or Norristown should not be a problem.

Can Private Railroads operate passenger service without government help?

Funny, I visited Britian in 1985, and I was impressed by the BR service. They had a lot of trains and they were mostly on time. Of course, compared to what it was 10-20 years earlier, it might have been going downhill.

Japan railway firm pushes Maglev plan to 2034 or later

Oh, yeah, Maglev will get you from Washington to Baltimore in 20 minutes at a proposed fare of $50. Of course, right now, you can ride on an Acela that does the trip in 30 minutes and costs $40.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Amtrak kosher meals are basically like Flex dining, except that they give you more food. They're frozen and reheated as needed.
