Comparison of public funding for Amtrak vs. public funding for European passenger rail - Amtrak OIG analysis

Here's a gem from 2008 form the Amtrak OIG site: https://amtrakoig.gov/sites/default/files/reports/E-08-02-042208.PDF Overall Conclusions After examining a representative sample of European Passenger Train Operations over a multi-year period, we found that: a) When all revenues and...

    Riding the T for free

My daughter and I are up in Boston, taking care of some business. We rode up on a Northeast Regional which was fine, except that it was slow compared to the Acela. When we got to South Station, we went down to the T and bought aa few subway rides for each of us. The plan was to ride to Park...

    Japan Railway Journal

So I was channel surfing late last night and I see that my cable provider offers NHK World, the international channel of Japan's public broadcaster. Well, what do you know, they have a program about trains! This was the one I saw: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/ondemand/video/2049139/...

    Wasington DC auto show

Got to take a sneak peak at the auto show this evening as part of an SAE conference. The new cars were meh, though I'm glad to see that Toyota is bow making the Corolla Cross in a hybrid, even if it is 2 years late for me. But the antiques are always fun to look at. 1954 Corvette 1962...

Last week attended the Transportation Research Board annual meeting in Washington. This is a group organized by the National Academies or Science, Engineering and Medicine to provide coordinate research on transportation matters and runs advisory committees to provide expert input to...

Baltimore Light Rail shut down indefinitely

Just saw on the news that the Baltimore light rail has been shut down until they can fix the LRVs so that they don't blow up. Something about "high voltage conduit." Apparently there was an explosion last October, which makes you wonder why they waited over a month to do something.

    Downtown ticket offices

I have some business in DC today, and as I was walking past 17th and K Sts. NW, I remembered that there used to be an Amtrak ticket office on the 1700 block of K St. In fact. back in the 1980s I did some business there, changing some tickets. It was next to an American Airlines downtown ticket...

Canadian Circle Trip: VIA and Amtrak

Well, we're off, but I'm not sure the engineer knows the direction. We pulled out of Union Station going southwest, then looped up north. Somwhere around Vaughn, we stopped dead, and now we're reversing, as it seems maybe someone didn't throw the right switch. I had a little excitement...

On my way to the Canadian

Off to the Great White North! I'm now rolling along in Northeast Regional 164 on the first leg of my Canadian Circle trip. Changing trains in New York for a ride up the Hudson Valley on the Ethan Allen Express, and then spending the night in Albany. Omorrow morning it's the Maple Leaf to...

    VIA corridor turn from Toronto

I have a whole day layover in Toronto, and I am considering the possibility of sampling the VIA Toronto - Montreal corridor service for at least part of the day. According to the timetable on the RPA website, it seems that there's am 8:32 AM departure from Toronto (#52/62) that stops in Oshawa...

Restoring rail service on railbanked rail trails

https://www.amtraktrains.com/threads/boston-montreal-new-rail-alignment.86005/#post-1019387 Aside from the political problems of eliminating a popular rail trail, there may be other reasons why restoring rail service on abandoned lines might not always be the best thing to do to restore rail...

    Washington DC Metro discussion

https://www.wmata.com/about/news/Red-Line-Construction.cfm Basically it's between Judiciary Square and Farragut North and includes shutting down Gallery Place and Metro Center, the two stations that connect the Red Line with the rest of the system. The reasoning is that the period over the...

    Email re schedule change

As part of my Canadian trip, I am riding the Maple Leaf to Toronto on November 6. The ticket is actually in two parts: Amtrak train 63 from Albany to the Candian Border and Via Rail train 98 (also listed as Thruway 7098) from the Canadian Border to Toronto. Today I got an email with the...

    Long-distance trip disruption summaries

Given all the horror stories we hear about long-distance trains being cancelled or arriving more than 6-8 hours late, would it be possible to use the various tracker databases to generate a summary of each long-distance train's recent history of cancellations or other disruptions? It sure seems...

Dining in steerage class on the great transatlantic ocean liners

Everybody talks about the delicious gourmet food that the first class passengers ate on the liners during the Golden Age. Well, what about the steerage passengers? I found this on the web: Now how does this compare to flex dining? And also, note that they apparently had Pursers and...

Notes from my recent Maine trip

As I mentioned in another post, I've been starting my Maine trips the last couple of years by riding the Silver Star southbound Baltimore to Washington, where my Dad picked me up. This was so that I could drive him up to Maine in his car. I stayed up, enjoyed the mountains and relatively cool...

    Transport to Airports

You know, back in the day, we used to have 3 express bus routes that ran from Downtown Baltimore and 2 suburban hotels straight to BWI Airport, no stops. They were coach-style buses with luggage areas in the bottom of the bus. They were actually very convenient, more expensive than the usual...
