    Trump and Amtrak/Budget cutting funding

Amtrak is an easy target because it is presented and thought of in our national transportation policy (unjustly, IMO) as a "Subsidy" budget item. OTOH, expenditures costing billions of dollars such as deepening port channels by the Army Corps of Engineers and improving the Interstate Highway...

Thanks for the links, jis. National news just now picking this one up, since a brief mention in the WSJ about 35 minutes ago.

    Seattle King Street Station

The newly renovated station is magnificent. The other posts are correct regarding the lack of amenities at King Street. However, on our March trip, I recall seeing a drug store (Rite-Aid, Walgreens - cant remember which) under construction across the street from the front of the station. Also...

CSX Cumberland Subdivision to NS Valley Line connection

At Shenandoah Jct., there's a running track & a delivery track off the CSX #2 main track. It's active insofar as the CSX employee timetable is concerned, but there is not currently any scheduled interchange work performed there, AFAIK.

Extend Palmetto to Jacksonville to save $ on crew base

I certainly wish it would operate all the way to JAX again (it did for a short time several years ago.) But as Seaboard92 pointed out, it would take additional crews to do so. Presently the Florence-domiciled crew off 89 takes rest in SAV for the next morning's 90.

Sunset Limited Reroute via Las Cruces

It's a gem of a small city with what looks like a decent ridership base, and is also well-worth a visit, IMHO (great food!) I think so, too. The loss of seamless dispatching would probably be one of the largest obstacles. That's an excellent point. Your description of the current NM government...

    RF&P Meltdown 7/23

I'd prefer to remain factual. Let's look at it this way, if you want to point a finger at John Snow. IIRC, he was CEO of CSX from 1989 to 2003, although he held other C-Suite positions prior to that. Using 1995 as a sample (I chose that year at random), here are train accident rates per 1M...

    car alarms

Many are the 52s & 53s I recall watching by in the Carolinas in the early 1990s that had a vehicle alarm going off inside one of the auto carriers. According to the operating crews, it was hardly an unusual occurrence at that point in time.

    Future Atlanta Service

Very salient points. In the past when 19/20 operated with shorter trains ATL-NOL, Amtrak contracted with NS for switching as well as Mechanical services. The cars were staged at the old Armour Yard a few miles north of Peachtree Station. As far as the Georgia General Assembly is concerned, you...

Stations that aren't in the downtown

Jacksonville indeed has a city center, with Downtown on the north bank of the St. Johns River bordered by EverBank Field (the enlarged former Gator Bowl) on the east and I-95 on the west. The former downtown railroad station, Jacksonville Terminal, is at the foot of Water Street at Park Street...
