    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

Thanks. That means I won’t be traveling by Amtrak to Vancouver anytime soon. I would have considered it if Talgo or even Venture large-windowed stock was operating the route.

What equipment is currently operated to Vancouver? If it varies, is there any consistency by train? Thanks…

    California Zephyr discussion

Book the transition sleeper (line number 540 or 640), also known as the crew dorm. Even-numbered rooms are always to the right, odd to the left. Roomettes only in this car. I prefer this car if available. Another plus: there’s a shower on the upper level. Another plus: the conductor often...

Why can GPS issues delay a train 45 minutes?

Update: San Joaquin train 710 arrived Bakersfield 2 hours late on a scheduled 6.5-hour trip. We got later and later. Train was restricted to 59 mph (vs. 79), and meets were screwed up. Train 712 caught up to 710 and was slightly delayed by it. Passengers for #4 had to be bused to Barstow.

Why can GPS issues delay a train 45 minutes?

This is the second time I’ve been significantly delayed on the San Joaquins between Martinez and Antioch. Today was 45 minutes. Train personnel ascribe the delays to a computer issue, requiring involvement of the help desk. Today the engineer stated it was a GPS problem. How can GPS...

Canceling vs modifying a ticket bought with points

I’ve now encountered two successive AGR phone agents that say there is no way to override re-pricing when changing sleeping car rooms of the same type, on the same train. Both agents were firm, and when I asked for their supervisor, they transferred me to Customer Relations where there was a...

Thx everyone….and when do they open the lounge car for refreshments?

It was auto-assigned, booking through the app.

Superliner trains' removal and restoration of cars (2022-2023)

Oh joy! I was assigned car 532 from CHI to EMY in early February.... Should I call in from time to time to see if space in one of the other two sleepers has opened up?

    Auto Train discussion

So check-in is from noon to 3. Is it still advisable to show up early to get your choice of dinner reservation time? At Sanford, does the city still sponsor a shuttle into downtown to avoid waiting at the station? Boarding is at 3:00? When does on-board service start in the lounge? If not...

    Modifying/canceling a reservation

I changed my travel date for no charge within the 24-hour window. Do I now get a new 24-hour period for free cancellation? Sure, I could change again without penalty for many days under Amtrak's current policy, but my question is about cancellation and refund of points. It appears that...

Persistent toilet odor in Superliner roomette #4

This was an ongoing problem on my Southwest Chief trip from LA to KC last fall. You wouldn’t think the odor from the upstairs lavatory would carry that far. I’m now thinking you don’t want to be any closer to the center of the car than Roomettes 5 or 6, especially if your nearest and dearest...

AGR Credit Card change (October 2022)

No mention of 1,000 Tier Qualifying Points for each $5K spent, up to $20K. Is this still a feature? Also, the bank (which most people have never heard of) seems minimally involved. I didn’t see a single bank logo on the card or any of the paperwork. I wonder what their customer service is...

    Transition Sleeper discussion

Have transition sleepers returned on any Superliner train, with space sold to passengers? If so, which ones? I prefer these cars because you know which side of the train you'll be on.

Penalty for changing companion passenger on Sleeper reservation?

That would be nice, but it doesn't work that way in airline world...where you'd have to cancel the companion's ticket and buy a whole new one for someone else, because the name is everything. Can someone confirm that Amtrak does things differently?

Penalty for changing companion passenger on Sleeper reservation?

So I book a sleeping car room for 2 passengers. But the second passenger can’t make it. Can I substitute someone else without fare or points penalty? (This would probably be a points booking.) Thanks!

    Roomette discussion

Roomette 10 is right at the end of the car, so there could be noise from the end of car door opening frequently as people pass through. But it is on the upper level (better for viewing scenery) and isn't near any toilet so you won't smell those nasty odors (unlike Superliner Room 2, or even 4...

Great...any other first-hand experience outside of irregular operations?

    Baggage checking

My local Amtrak station allows checked bags to be dropped off up to 24 hours before train departure time, and picked up to 24 hours after train arrival without a storage fee. This is very convenient if you have bulky items that require a special trip to or from the station. Is this Amtrak’s...
