    JAL crash on runway

The successful evacuation of this burning plane on the runway at Haneda has renewed my hope for our species.

Why no elevated platform in Flagstaff?

It seems to me :) that there was a FTC (failure to communicate :)) between the coach attendant and the Conductor. Somehow, the "Conductor" -- I can't see his hat or badge in this video -- obviously didn't know that the passenger hadn't already detrained. I think, correct me if I'm wrong, that...

Lesser known Railroad Museums in small towns

Was there at the museum at the amtrak station. OMG it's a tiny museum but the docent at the control panel of the ancient steam engine , when I asked what he knew about steam propulsion, he knew more than most of us know about steamships. Small museum but so close to the station and worth visiting.

Circle trip MSP -SAN - TUS - FLG- LAX - SEA - MSP

I'm hoping also. Seeing long-time (like 30 years ago friends) I dunno why but Halifax is one place I wanna visit before I die.

Circle trip MSP -SAN - TUS - FLG- LAX - SEA - MSP

Departed MSP on Greyhound from SPUD 2023-11-17 01:10. Arrived 2023-12-09 SPUD 08:something. Now there is no possible way to make connection from the Empire Builder MSP - CHI to any western train, even if the EB is on time. So I took the 01:10 Greyhound from SPUD to MKE. Worked great except...

    Chicago Union Station discussion

The Blue Line from O'Hare to CUS has worked well for me, but I'm a (mostly) able-bodied 75-year-old. Last trip late November MSP-SanAntoine I took a Greyhound to MKE and tranferred to the Hiawatha at MKE (where the vending machines take one's, twos, and fives) Because I didn't wanna do the...

    Hiawatha discussion

My first time on a Hiawatha in 9 years was last Saturday 18 Nov. First run of day MKE to CHI. Venture cars, uneventful trip, apparently 5 car consist, repeated announcements that first car not quiet car today. Full train but pleasant trip.

Mudslide in Westchester Co. affecting trains between Albany and NYC

The similarities to the West Coast events in the last few years are discouraging at best. Tracks below bluffs near river or sea or sound. (or above bluffs that beetle o'er the sea). Looks a lot like the tracks from Seattle to Everett. Top of bluff is "developed", trees and their roots gone...

Travel from Vancouver to San Diego advice?

Good food in and near SLO, and decent hourly regional bus service from San Luis Obispo to the beach villages. The local buses in San Luis Obispo had "SLO transit" on their sides then. It's been nine years since I spent three days in a cheap motel closer to Pismo Beach than Grover Beach where the...

Travel from Vancouver to San Diego advice?

I also wonder. I've never been to New England, alas. The clam chowder, red or white, in Seattle's cheap waterfront places has been Okay. Never had clam chowder in California though.

    Rail stations at Airports

Hehe. Decades ago, arriving KLM first time AMS, instructed by multilingual in-person help desk to NS station several levels down from runway level, (runways only a few meters below MSL) The emergency exit signs at the NS (Nederlandse Spoorwagen) station maybe 10 meters below the runways or 13...

    Empire Builder discussion

Looks now like EB that departed Chicago this afternoon has been "disrupted" and won't visit Minnesota or points West

    Empire Builder service disruption

I'll be interested to see the consist of this Tuesday's Empire Builder. After the previous cancellation of the EB (when it derailed in Chicago Union Station earlier this month) the consist the next day included one extra coach in the Seattle section and two extra sleeping cars, one up front and...

Why don't more "High Profile" people ride the train?

By "high Profile" are we talking "Celebs -- public performers for profit"? They use private jets and have makeup artists waiting after every flight for their next "appearance" Or people like Zelenskiy who have real importance -- maybe surprise secret private military jet. "high Profile means...

    Empire Builder discussion

One small additional thing. Flooding chances on upper Mississippi here increase every little spring snowstorm like in the photo above. There's another storm in the forecast for next week, rain or snow, nobody knows yet, but . . . Anybody planning to ride the Builder in the next month or so...

    Empire Builder discussion

Daughter sent photo of #7 at Minot this morning. Those are icicles along the roof and windows and air intake of the Superliner. #7 left MSP just ahead of the overnight thundersnow here in Saint Paul. [edit to add] Always adventurous daughter is taking the younguns in coach from MSP to SEA to...

Effect of Winter Storm Alejandra on Amtrak

The weather forecast for eastern NoDak looks bad for the Empire Builder today through Friday, especially the route between Fargo and Grand Forks and west to Devil's Lake or Minot. Like Blizzard and Winter Storm warnings. Expect cancellation? Re-route by the KO Fargo to Minot?

People stealing off of freights in Los Angeles

If caught and convicted -- oy. Civil suit to recover damages from the homeless people who live near the tracks because railroad property is not NIMBY property - who is kidding here? If, and it's a BIG if, the organizers of this possibly big-time theft scheme, are found and brought to trial, the...
