Elimination of diners on western Amtrak long distance trains?

Something in the business world known as lost leaders, ie, you lose money on item A, but by getting the customer into the store, you do sell them B and C... the repuggie complaint about losing money on the dinning cars is a red herring - just an excuse to eliminate Amtrak and force more people...

Elimination of diners on western Amtrak long distance trains?

Maybe what I did on the last CZ trip might become a norm, especially in a world of cell phones: but at Grand Junction, the day before, arranged with restaurants for meals (lunches), and a food delivery service... and had Mexican waiting for me on the platform going one way; and Chinese going...

Amtrak Revenue and Cash Shortfall - Merged

Many thanks for posting such... having real numbers makes the situation more clear/understandable... :-) :-(

Amtrak Revenue and Cash Shortfall - Merged

Two thoughts come to mind: 1) How much of this shortfall has to do with Congress continuing to squeeze Amtrak, ie, if one looks at generated revenue - has that changed significantly, in percentage terms? 2) With fuel costs down - being used as an excuse for people to drive vs let Amtrak drive...

Freight Engines for California Zephyrs Due to Blizzard

Reading between the lines: the reason for a freight loco from BNSF is because Amtrak doesn't have sufficient extra locos, and not because the freight units are some how better equipped to deal with the snowy conditions?

    Diner Seating

I don't know... seems to me that the best possible music is already there: the sounds of the train :-)

DEA asset seizure on SWC ($16,000)

looks like Quote button is still not working... Peter... Back in the '90s there was quite a bit of cooperation in the particle physics research world with ex-Soviet physicists in search of jobs... and a lot of this being searched and your suggestion to make it look like lawyer payment etc...

    Insane routings

Something about: to err is human; to screw it up beyond all recognition, still requires a computer... ;-)

DEA asset seizure on SWC ($16,000)

Don't know why the Quote button has stopped working for me... :-( and now I can't even cut and paste what I was trying to reply to :-( my comment is in response to post #19... way back on page 1 It could be... but then again, and very much more likely, it is a perfectly legal and...

    Amtrak Derailment Philadelphia (5/12/2015)

Wonder if PTC wouldn't reduce the chances of this happening?

Restoring Desert Wind by reducing frequency of CZ

Basically I have to agree with the comments... but do have to wonder if maybe the demographics haven't change since then, ie, a very large retiring boomer generation (that was more of the jet-setter generation then)... wonder if they might not be more inclined toward a train vs today's flying...

    LD on downward path

Would be nice if there was a clickable: "Forward To Amtrak Management"... and to generally think, we here are the defenders of Amtrak... imagine what the rest must be saying?

Silver Meteor hits truck in Florida 11/7/14

Climbing up on his soapbox: But what ever happened to personal responsibility? Why does there even HAVE to be laws and regulations? Climbing down... somebody needs the wood.

Silver Meteor hits truck in Florida 11/7/14

Sad, but painfully and very true. ... Although in the case alluded to, it was a 20something that nearly killed Anita: don't know if she'll ever teach again [she's facing a long long string of reconstructive surgeries, and that's over and above the question if she'll ever walk w/o a cane or...

Silver Meteor hits truck in Florida 11/7/14

All the more reason I have to ask if there wasn't a cellphone complicit in this... if one is looking down at one's lap and not out the windows, then impeccable visibility both ways is a moot point. ... MADD in the 90's went a long ways toward changing the social norm w/re drunk driving -...

A Couple Things About the California Zephyr

Suspect it's situation dependent, but, the third coach: did that likely get put into service elsewhere? ... they're taking advantage of it's downtime to do delayed maintenance, maintenance that can't be done within the normal schedule? Or, is just a cost savings of not having to drag it around...

Empire Builder and BNSF Track Upgrades in North Dakota

I can't imagine the extra sidings and double track not helping EB and its OTP problems... though wonder just how much it'll actually help... but one can always hope for the best. Though a question comes up out of this: if it costs x dollars a mile to lay down virgin track, ie, obtain the ROW...

    Backpacking From an Amtrak Station

Although Dunsmuir was mentioned w/re the CS, what wasn't mentioned was: the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) crosses I-5 and thus the UP ROW 3 mi south of town (at the Soda Creek exit off of I-5)... at that point one is approx. 1000 trail miles south of the Canadian border and 1600 trail miles north...
