    Ely, NV- Visiting Northern railway

I have never been, but unless you have access to a private aircraft, it looks like you need to get to Elko in some fashion (Amtrak or commercial flight) and rent a car there. The drive from Elko is about 2 hours and 45 minutes. There used to be commercial air service into Ely but that ended ten...

Question about truncation of Sunset Limited

I found this list on Wikipedia that purports to list all current and former routes.

    CN Rouses Point Track (Adirondack)

This is a stab in the dark, but considering that CP has committed to support Amtrak as part of its merger with KCS, would it be possible to reroute the Adirondack into Lucien-L'Allier over the Lacolle Subdivision if CN proves recalcitrant on this?

L' Enfant Plaza - flag stop?

FWIW, The Alaska Railroad operates the Hurricane Turn, a train that operates on a flag stop basis and will stop anywhere along its route. I'm not sure how that jibes with ADA regulations.

Michigan question (getting from Saginaw to Flint or Pontiac)

If OP has a time machine, it would make more sense to take the New York Central through sleeper via train 352 to Jackson and the Valley Express to Chicago.

Michigan question (getting from Saginaw to Flint or Pontiac)

You could go by bus from Saginaw to Kalamazoo via a transfer in Flint on Indian Trails. You would get in to Kalamazoo at 7:05 PM and could then take the 9:02 PM Wolverine to Chicago. You actually used to be able to book this on Amtrak.

    Amtrak serving every state capital

Has there ever been passenger train service in Olympia, WA proper? The current Centennial Station is Lacey and before that, trains stopped outside the city limits in East Olympia. Likewise, the current station serving Montpellier, VT is in the adjacent town of Berlin. Was there ever a station in...

Former Host Railroads of Amtrak Routes

Also, once the Maple Leaf and Adirondack resume: Canadian National ~Rouses Point, NY to Montreal, QC 49 Miles ~Niagara Falls, ON, to Toronto, ON 82 Miles Total Miles: 131 Miles (or 49 Miles if the Maple Leaf between Niagara Falls, ON and Toronto is considered to not be an Amtrak train).

Scranton Times-Tribune: Amtrak proposes adding passenger train route to Scranton

This is really interesting, since New Jersey Transit already has plans to operate the same route. Amtrak proposes adding passenger train route to Scranton

Question about truncation of Sunset Limited

What was the reason that service on the Sunset Limited east of New Orleans was never restored? There seem to be be a ton of articles talking about proposal to restore train service between New Orleans and Jacksonville, but I haven't found anything that explains why service was never restored...

    Coast Starlight service change question

This weekend, and last weekend as well for that matter, the Coast Starlight is not running south of Oakland due to track work on the Coast Line. Normally, when something like this happens, the Coast Starlight detours via the Tehachapi Loop to Los Angeles rather than being truncated. I was...

Early boarding for irrop of City of New Orleans on March 20?

Due to CN track work, the southbound CONO departure from Chicago for March 20 will instead be at 1:30 AM on March 21. I was just curious if, considering the ungodly hour of the new departure time, if anyone has any idea if passengers boarding in Chicago will be permitted to board earlier in the...

Logistics of enabling connection between 92 and 29

That’s interesting that that is permitted. I thought the minimum connection time for connections from long distance trains was 90 minutes. Is that something that's more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule, or am I mistaken about that being a thing at all?

Logistics of enabling connection between 92 and 29

I just noticed that 92 gets into WAS three minutes too late to be a legal connection to 29. Would it be logistically difficult for Amtrak to either have 92 depart MIA three minutes earlier, tighten the en route dwell time for 92 by three minutes, or have 29 depart WAS three minutes later? Or is...

    No ID

That does appear to be an option for New York residents, but OP would still then need either their social security card or birth certificate as a second document. That's still better though, because that means risking only one identity document getting lost in the mail rather than two.

    No ID

According to page 8-7 of the service standards manual, at the link below, it seems like your best bet is to have someone back home express mail you your birth certificate and social security card. Those two together will be adequate ID. It has to be your actual social security card and either...

Questions about domestic in-transit luggage inspection.

I would say that's the case, just as it would be if you declined to consent to a random gate side frisk being conducted at an airport where you were making a connecting flight, as happens on rare occasions.

Questions about domestic in-transit luggage inspection.

According to this 2016 document, Amtrak's responsibility in the event a passenger is refused carriage for declining to consent to a law enforcement search is to refund the passenger. http://media.amtrak.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Security_Fact_Sheet_5-5-16.pdf

    Vermonter Service Disruption September 10-12

The Vermonter is being replaced by bus service north of Springfield from September 10-12 due to work on an underpass on the Connecticut River Line just north of Springfield Union Station. (The Valley Flyer is being cancelled as well, with no bus replacement, but that's impertinent to my...
