Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

The NS crews would have to qualify about 5.5 miles from the end of the NS Back Belt to Avondale - UP/BNSF. This is across the Huey P. Long Bridge which is owned by the Public Belt railroad. A little more than a few hundred feet. Also, there is a lot of traffic across the bridge, so it would - in...

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

To clear up a couple of things that was said - The NS would have a hard time changing crews in their yard. It is off the mainline and not directly along the mainline. A train would have to enter the yard, change crews, reverse out or change ends with the engines and then depart. They are unable...

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

To give an example of what the railroads want - here is some of what the NS is stating today that they need. Extend the freight lead 9000 ft across 5 new bridges, making it a total of 12,000 ft. At Elysian Fields where CSX ends connecting to the NS back belt, change out the diamond on one track...

Former Host Railroads of Amtrak Routes

A couple more I thought of: Decatur, Al. The Floridian used the Southern Rwy from the depot across the Southern Rwy bridge to a junction north of the Tennessee river. The depot and bridge is part of the Southern mainline (Memphis and Charleston RR). In fact, the depot was manned by Southern...

Former Host Railroads of Amtrak Routes

One more very small addition: L&N - Birmingham, Al. 13th St to 24th Street. Station is the L&N station. 1 mile

Triweekly service will be overshadowed by drop in revenue

A quote from one of Amtrak's former Product Line Directors: "Amtrak has no corporate memory".

    Crescent Disruption

This is the NS trackwork that is done annually south of Atlanta. It is for 4 to 6 weeks each year. Actually, the trackwork has already started but is not yet at the point where it will cause a shut down of the railroad. The NS each year replaces several miles of welded rail. The NS brings the...

Amtrak and bus to Nashville - which route?

The Birmingham to Nashville option is out now. Greyhound dropped the bus without notice. You can still return, though. (Well, actually, you can purchase from Greyhound going to Nashville, but the 1pm bus is really too close to reliably make the connection and the next option is 730pm, 7 hour...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

Checking the Florida Traffic cams, I found that construction can be seen along Fl528 on the two camera between I-95 and US 1. https://fl511.com/map#Camera

    Peachtree Station Signage Observation

The station in Atlanta was rebuilt just before the Olympics. A passenger elevator was added at that time along with a new ticket counter. Previously, the station had only one window facing Peachtree Street. In 2000, there was a large sign package installed that was all Green and Gold.

Questions (Amtrak vs Greyhound, DEN to ORL)?

Just a hint into the clientele on Greyhound - I know members of the "Airport Interdiction Team" locally. They are the local police department's drug team. They visit not just the airport but other transportation companies. I asked them a couple of times if they visited the local Greyhound...

    Peachtree Station Signage Observation

The signage at the Atlanta station was completely updated in 2000. Remember that it was during the time of the Product lines and many of them were using colors, graphics, etc of the previous carriers. That is why you see the signs at Atlanta in green and gold.

Crescent - Why so bad south of Atlanta

The NS has added several additional trains on the route from Meridian north (off the KCS). These trains are longer and heavier and the route was not designed to handle these longer trains. In fact, there is only one siding that is capable of two of these GIANT trains meeting between Meridian and...

Got a favorite detour you have ridden?

My favorite was riding the Crescent between Birmingham and Atlanta on the CSX, former SAL line. I rode this 2 or 3 times. In fact, it became a regular event in the winter or spring to reroute on this line when the Southern/NS was doing annual trackwork. It was 30 min faster than the regular...

An Amtrak route segment no longer in use

Again, the Silver Star - Between Savannah and Jacksonville, actually Burroughs Jct (south of Savannah) and Callahan (north of Jacksonville), with a stop in Thalman, Ga. Most of this track is gone now. It was a very fast route when it was used. My favorite though is a train not running any...

    Clemson Station

Did the state ever start the work to replace the bridge just south of the station? That project was what prompted the NS to temporarily move the mainline and forced Amtrak to not stop there. Last I heard it was still in limbo due to controversy over the new bridge or funding.

    amtrak crescent delays

Today, 20 was delayed south of Meridian meet NS 355. Then held at Boligee due to 393 on the law on the mainline at Eutaw waiting for a relief crew. Also, 20 held at Boligee to meet 3 NS trains.

    amtrak crescent delays

Precision(less) Railroading at it's best. Recently 20 was delayed near Tuscaloosa because NS 198 had gone on the law - on the mainline. (this would be in the early afternoon) The next day 19 was delayed meeting 198 outside of Atlanta (early morning). Not much precision running their own trains...

    amtrak crescent delays

Most of the delays are between Meridian and Tuscaloosa. NS is having a hard time running the long intermodal trains due to lack of useable long sidings. Trains are having to "saw" by. There are two long sidings but when used by an intermodal train, it blocks too many crossings and cuts the towns...
