40K points for FNBO Preferred Mastercard

I used to have the paid card. I reapplied two weeks ago and got approval in seconds. Even adding the 40,000 in a few months to my existing points doesn't get me too far.

    Fares that don't make sense

My last two summers I had bedroom B in Cardinal (1st week of September) Chicago to Charlottesville 2022 and Chicago to Alexandria 2023. Bedroom A was not taken but was used by my SCA to spend a lot of time on her cell phone.

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

The bathroom door does not open fully. You are correct as its only about 70%. It could be a tight squeeze for some folks.

Model train store in Massachusetts says it's the largest in America

That's so cool! I miss my O gauge model train room I had in my last house. I recently set up a nice size layout in my townhouse living room and my 5 year granddaughter was so excited. She was working the Z4000 transformer in no time!

Amtrak Dining and Cafe service 2023 H2

On my September trip on the Star from Was to Wpb I was told to expect to sit with others. Seated alone is nice but most of my LD trips have been seated with others. When I arrived at 6pm I was the only one in the dining car the whole time. LSA and I chatted a bunch. She was nice. At breakfast...

    Temperature in Sleepers?

My last several trips in a sleeper have been comfortable to chilly which is ok for me. I'd give a lot to just once have a thermostat that worked :)

You do get two carryons free which can both be standard size suitcases. Lots of overhead room.

New Orleans to Chicago via Charlottesville VA

I took the Cardinal last summer from Chicago to Charlottesville. Stayed at the Omni and enjoyed downtown that evening. Next day I spent the day at Monticello. Took an Uber. Yes this town should provide transportation service to Monticello. Great place immerse yourself in early American history...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

Thats a bit of a broad stroke. Ive ridden WPB-MIA and WPB-FTL several times in last 36 months and all on time or close enough it didnt matter. Dont know if you have taken a ride but its a good experience imo. Then again there have been lots of incidents which skews performance.

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

I made a roomette reservation in April for this September 8 and selected 9110 DC to WPB as I wanted a Viewliner I. All posts here since then seem to confirm that so far 9110 is a Viewliner I. I called Guest Rewards yesterday and asked how many roomettes 9110 has total. I was then going to ask...

    My Lionel O-Scale

Very cool. I had an O gauge setup at my former house before down sizing. My builder handled all the bench work. My bonus room was 300 sq feet and most of it was the layout. 2 tracks. One was Amtrak and the other freight. Took a year to get it all done making the buildings, trees, landscape etc...

    Beer in Roomette?

A small soft side cooler will hold a six pack. I fill it with ice when checking out of hotel. My SCA has always brought additional ice as needed.

    California Zephyr discussion

One summer several years ago I flew to Reno from SLC to ride CZ to Chicago. I spent the night in Reno and was leaving the next day. After boarding I had a knock on my door and a detective identified himself. I was a single guy, backpack and small suitcase and one way ticket in a bedroom. He...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Its tough if you dont fly. Its not an adventure for me just gets me from a to b. Ill still take the train but shorter routes I guess. I do like to cruise. Its a better value than Amtrak as I gamble and receive nice benefits. Things go in cycles so who knows maybe affordable cross country trips...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

I have begun to use up my Amtrak points and now continue to build points on airline credit cards. My every summer cross country west coast to south Florida train trips in bedrooms look to be over for me. I do have two trips scheduled in September starting in Chicago now back to south Florida. I...

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

I just booked a roomette on 91 from Was-Wpb in September. Looking for a VI. I tried asking how many roomettes she showed in 9110. Since there are 12 in VI and 11 in VII I thought that would work. She told me there were 8 roomettes in 9110? Maybe thats all that was available to book. I guess as...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Usually take the Star back to Florida from DC or ALX at end of summer trips. I look forward to better food than last year. In 30+ years Ive never eaten a meal in my room. Had a V2 bedroom last year but can no longer justify the price. Roomette for a night will work.

    Amtrak long distance fares 2021-2023

I find myself doing the same thing. I have only one Amtrak ride (Cardinal) scheduled (bedroom) Chicago-Alexandria (points) in September. My third cruise in a year is in April. I live less than an hour from the port so no airfare.
