I wondered if these were new, I didn't see them in December, but had plain clothes cops on the train chatting with everyone this time through. Have you guys experienced thus too?

Kinda excited about being able to ride in a 'new to me' type of sleeper. Tho technically I got lost on the CS once and wound up in the trasndorm and met quite an amusing chef.

It's on the Southwest Chief, which has the honor of being the train with the best service I've received on amtrak, my sca was really amazing. The CS is pretty much everyone's favorite train, having a beer in those fabulous lounge chairs is always fun.

Still wish there was rail service from madison to chicago, but y'know :)

Really excited to be going back to California on the train basically a repeat of my december in reverse (out on the SC, north on the CS and back to WI on the CZ). There's the detour of course via WY, but since I have about 500 pictures of the rockies form last time I wasn't super bummed. Really...

Are you basically in LAX overnight doin the SWC to the CS?

Hey folks, I'm curious if you have any ideas on the best route to take Chicago to Sacramento, The cz is the most direct, but I've done it before and maybe other routes would have a bit more adventure. What you guys think?

I agree, I've had some great dinner conversations but the lounge is better for some really quirky folks :)

I agree that the observation car / lounge is the best place to socialize, and you'll meet lots of interesting folks. I've also met some really interesting folks at dinner.

I was on both these trains the first week in december, the roomette was quite warm, the rest of the train was fine, but the roomette was maybe 10 - 15 degrees warmer. I typically wore a tshirt and jeans with a hoodie or sweater I could put on to wander arround the train.

We were in the 79-82 mph going across Nevada in early december, assuming my smart phone speedometer app is valid.

I'm doing WAS -> FL (Deerfield Beach). Good news about dinner :)

I can only speak for me, I've flown for nearly all of my 35 years, and only really experienced trains the last 2. At this point I'll always take a sleeper over a plane. I think the average traveler may just want to get there, but I do think getting there on a train in half the fun. The reason I...

Oddly on the CZ the salads were pretty awful, only iceberg letuce and a few almost rotten tomatos, the CS & SC had way better salads. I'm always a fan of the steak, and the seafood was surprisingly good. I tend to enjoy the french toast or omelette (I've heard the oatmeal is really good)
