Amtrak Downeaster train hits tree in Haverhill, knocked out of service

HAVERHILL, MASS. (WHDH) - An Amtrak train in Haverhill was knocked out of service Thursday night after it struck a tree on the tracks.

The front of the engine was dented and covered in leaves.

Ninety people were on board at the time, at least some of whom transferred to a Commuter Rail train.

The "engine" is actually an NPCU (non powered control unit) or "Cabbage" made from an F40PH locomotive.

Apparently they hit the tree just North of Haverhill and were able to crawl into Haverhill station where the passengers could transfer to the MBTA Haverhill local to reach North Station.
