Amtrak policy says:
"Empty, factory-installed ski and luggage racks are okay; temporary luggage and bicycle racks are not. Luggage and bicycles may not be attached to the roof. Bicycles in bicycle racks may be attached to the back of the vehicle only."
I cannot figure out if they mean the bicycle rack needs to be they type that physically attached to the rear of the vehicle via a trailer hitch? Is a trunk mounted rack considered "temporary" by Amtrak since it uses straps? I already own trunk-mounts, so this would be cheaper than buying a hitch. In the past I've been able to put the bikes inside our minivan, but this trip we have more people
I've called Amtrak and all they can do is re-read the policy over the phone, and there are no local numbers listed for either Lorton or Sanford. Has anyone done this and can clarify what is allowed?
