If the candidates were trains...

Tonight I'll be at an "elitist election party" (no, not the one at Grant Park). I'm not sure what's going to make it especially elitist; maybe we'll drink lattes with our pinkies up or something. I hope we watch the returns on Faux News just for the schadenfreude.

Count on Starbucks to do something clearly partisan.... I betchya they are in the coffee tank for Obama.
And Dunkin Donuts is in it for McCain.

Massachusetts-based Dunkin Donuts?! No way. Krispy Kreme's got the back of the McCain voters (and beat those johnny-come-latelys to financial free-fall).

Then Dunkin is in it for the Socialist Party USA-

HEY, that's not fair. There's only a Dunkin Donuts near me!
On second thought, what am I saying! I'm a Paranoid Re..... oh never mind!
No need to worry- they are Socialists now... krispy Kreme are the ones to look out for!

Wife and I voted early yesterday and plenty of people doing the same. Over 5,000 early votes as of Saturday in a county with a population of less than 50,000 people. A glorious day for democracy in America no matter who wins. :p

I heard Starbucks is giving away a free coffee if you show your "I voted" sticker when you enter the store.
In fact, they will take your word for it. Now, that's is finally a reason to vote!
I am still waiting for the sun to come up. Do you think Starbucks will provide the free coffee before the polls open, or there will be any left by the time ours open?

Aloha

Very early returns have Starbucks leading Dunkin' Donuts by a whopping margin in the popular vote.

Several elections back Subway offered free six-inch sandwiches to anybody wearing one of those "I Have Voted, Have You?" ballot stubs. I was a poll worker for that one, and coulda fed half the town with the stubs that were tossed; multiple ballots. As I recall, Subway took a real bath - far more people than expected took advantage - and has not repeated the promotion.

Dunkin Donuts' party affiliation hardly reflects its historical roots these days. The Dunkin Donuts wikipedia article says that one of its owners is the Carlyle Group, which Wikipedia says has ties to the Bush family.

All these free offers! Several years ago CA made it illegal to offer anything free to people who voted. Bribery? Inducement? Who knows, but beware: if you're in CA and getting a free Starbucks you (or they) are breaking the law. Silly, don't you think?

OTOH, CA allows permanent vote-by-mail status, so I sent in my ballot a week ago. Sure is nice to avoid those lines. Something tells me that post-election we may see a push to allow all states to have robust early voting or vote-by-mail systems.

news.google.com has no shortage of coverage on that subject here; it's the second major story at the top of the toplevel news.google.com page right now. It sounds like a lot of these companies have switched to just giving free food to anyone, whether or not they've voted, which is perfectly legal.

Does CA count the mail-in votes as soon as they are received so the totals are added right in with today's votes from the poll votes? In my state absentee votes are counted after the election and it sometimes takes days before they know the total.

Last time I worked the polls absentee ballots in California were counted after election day. Not sure what the deal is nowadays with the major trend to mail-in.

BTW, I engaged in no electioneering as a poll worker, and found those days great opportunities to meet and greet folks from around the neighborhood who I may not have seen in awhile. Kind of a community bonding experience.

The hard part came after the polls closed. Numerous checklists and procedures to go through - open to the public - to make sure everything was fair and square, then take the ballot box to the County Center for tabulation. Long days.

Someone sent this to me today. I thought it was pretty good.

Our county has only vote-by-mail.....much easier than getting out in the pouring (cold) rain and wind. Nothing like doing your voting from the warmth of your living room.

If Obama is elected (and I'd say it looks that way) I hope there isn't the hatred toward him from the right wing that there was toward President Bush from the left. Sorry to say, however, that in my opinion, peace and harmony between the two parties will occur when the Sunset Limited is restored to full service, the Desert Wind, Pioneer, and other trains restored, and all Amtrak trains will record a 100% on-time performance. Oh, and the Cubs win the World Series.

I'm personally glad I won't have to watch those @#%$# ads anymore!
Dan

You can say that again! The mute button on my TV remote is worn down and the batteries dead from hitting "Mute" every time a political commercial comes up. And in the area I live, it's a double whammy: I live very near the Idaho border, and the local TV stations include Northern Idaho.....so I'm innundated by Idaho's politcal ads too. This day can't get over soon enough!!!!!

Already voted last week … via the absentee ballot. I figured that I might as well "get it done," and out of the way in time for the ballot to retunr to my home precinct. It was almost a sense of relief getting it out of the way.

I have issues with voting machines- most notably that it may be "Buy one Dem get two free GOP day" in Ohio... <_<

GG-1 (Eric) resides in Hawaii, where the polls are still open and I understand votes are cast with coconuts and pineapples.

Yes, a half coconut for Obama, and a shark fin for McCain- they just put them in the ballot box and count and see if they have more fins or nuts..

CNN is doing something weird, and apparently new. Using holographic imagery, correspondent Jessica Yellin is shown to be in the same studio as Wolf Blitzer, and they carry on a conversation.

EDIT: Yellin is actually in Chicago.

In the realm of "I can't believe it", I just saw a report on NBC that suggests that Palm Beach County in Florida is once again having big problems with their ballots.

Let's just hope that the vote in the rest of the state isn't so close that we are once again depending on PBC to figure out who voted for whom.
