BNSF Geo Train following Amtrak 4 12/1/21

Amtrak 4 departed Albuquerque a bit tardy with a PV on the rear. She is being followed by 2 BNSF GEVOs that are pulling GEO Cars. Passed Bernalillo, NM at 115pm MST, Amtrak 4 should be arriving into Lamy about this time.

Did BNSF have a qualified engineer or did an Amtrak engineer be on board as a pilot ?

BNSF ABQ crews took the train as far as Las Vegas, NM then a BNSF La Junta crew took over around 12am.

A GEO car is a track geometry measurement car, used to verify that the track meets certain standards, both internal to the railroad and as part of the federal track classification standards. They can be occasionally seen wandering the various systems of the railroads, and some of them have nicknames given by railfans, such as NS's "Brick," a converted locomotive.

On a BNSF Geometry train – the hopper is filled with a known weight that deflects the rails, which are then measured by instruments in and under the trailing car. Along with highspeed video taken from within the Geo car itself that is then transmitted to a central computer to be analyzed. It measures many rail parameters all at once and at track speed.
