Booking Multi-City trips Online- SameTrain Number differs?

Having some difficulty booking a multi city trip from PHL-CHI-GPK. Put in al the segments correctly and the choices show up but the same train shows with different numbers. For instance the Empire builder shows up as train #7 and #27. Tried to book by the std train number and the reservation shows "select train" even though it is selected. Do the different train number differentiate due to it being a segment of a trip . Just can't seem to complete the reservation

It's actually different cars for each train number. 7/8 are the Seattle cars and 27/28 are the Portland cars. Book whichever one costs less, unless you NEED to be close to the Dining Car, in which case you should book 7/8.

You will see a similar thing with the Texas Eagle. Trains 21 & 22 run between Chicago to San Antonio, trains 421 & 422 run between Chicago and LA and trains 321 & 322 run between Chicago & St Louis, but they are the same train.

Likewise, Trains 48 & 49 run between NYP and Chicago and trains 448 & 449 run between Boston and Chicago. Between Albany and Chicago, they are combined as 1 train.

During certain times, you may also see trains 807 & 808 offered on the EB. This is combined with the EB, but only runs between Chicago and St Paul.
