I was wondering how useful/interesting/entertaining the two volume CZ route guide for sale in the store at the Grand Junction Colorado stop is. I've glanced at it briefly, but figured I would Ask the man or woman who owns one before I bought them.

Thanks in advance!

If you're talking about the books by Eva J. Hoffman, they're definitely worth it. I've only used the Chicago-to-Denver volume, but it contains a wealth of information about everything along the route -- not just the station stops. Hoffman collected histories of everything along the way and shot many photos, too. Definitely worth buying.

There are actually THREE volumes of this book for the California Zephyr, not TWO, like the original poster mentioned. One is CHI-DEN, one is DEN-SLC, and the other is SLC-EMY.

And yes, they are *VERY* good. I use them everytime I take the Zephyr.

Eva Hoffman also has route guides written for the Sunset Limited, Southwest Chief, and Texas Eagle.

It's been my experience that you can get the Zephyr route guides and sometimes the Southwest Chief guies at the store in Grand Junction, but I've never see the other ones there. You can contact Eva's company, Flashing Yellow Guidebooks, to get the others.

I'll also plug the 300-page route guide I wrote for the Empire Builder from CHI-MSP... done in the same style as Eva's guidebooks:

I'll make sure I have your book for my next Empire Builder trip. Thanks for the heads up!
Thanks, I know you'll enjoy it. Send me a PM when you'd becoming through MKE... if I'm off work... I can swing by the depot during the crew change and sign your book if you wanted.

My 82 year old parents are taking the Zephyr from Omaha to San Francisco for Dad's USMC reunion in August. Did not know about these books. Amazon has the Denver-Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake City-San Francisco books on their site. $16.00 each from a third party seller. Just bought them and sent them to folks. Love this site!

While a new one is $16.00 a used one is $367.46 (per the link). Must be a really special copy.
