Does the California Zephyr have car x31 directly behind the diner and the x32 behind the x31?

I'm in 631 to Chicago and 531 return. Room 4 both ways.

Car 31 is closer to the diner than car 32. But in some months those two sleeping cars are at the front of the train and in other months those two sleeping cars are at the rear of the train. The crew dorm/sleeper is always adjacent to the baggage car, which is always at the front of the train unless there were operating issues and the inbound train could not be turned on a wye at its end station.

When are you traveling?

In a few more days the consist is likely to be in it's winter configuration with the sleeper cars at the front of the consist the diner, the SSL, and then the coach cars.

The above consist is actually outdated since there is no longer a seasonal sleeper CHI to DEN. During the peak summer months Amtrak runs three sleepers on the CZ and they all three run the entire route CHI to EMY.

Steve, that is correct. The change was not made until around January 12 in 2016. I traveled on January 13 with sleepers up front and SCA said this was second day of that arrangement. I also rode in early May and the sleepers were still up front. So if the change is made it will be made mid January and stay in effect until late May if they follow last year's schedule. You never know, maybe they will not make the change this year. For now, Amtrak has to figure out how to operate the Zephyr between Reno and Emeryville based on the record snow fall the Sierra Nevadas are experiencing now. It will be interesting how they handle the January 11 number 5 since there will be no number 6 arriving tomorrow January 10. For now two set os CZ equipment are stuck in Oakland unless they have relocated the equipment back to Chicago via a detour. Beginning today they are turning the equipment in Reno so tomorrow will be the only day a no. 6 does not arrive in Chicago.

Such as today: it looks like the westbound CZ will be annulled today at Reno, then leave eastbound this afternoon as today's train #6. Mudslides, high water and now heavy snow falling in the Sierra Nevada are contributing factors
