Amtrak spokesman Dan Stessel said the collision occurred at 9:37 a.m. when the dump truck failed to stop for the train in the community of Broad Run, just outside Manassas.
The train was northbound on Amtrak's Crescent run from New Orleans via Atlanta to New York City.
The full story from Fox News.

It is sad when this happens. Glad the train did not derail and it was not worse than it could have been.

Could not help but notice the train is referred to as the "Southern" Crescent. That is a name which only applied from 1970 to 1979. Strange how these things linger on. I have just recently detailed that history of name changes and route changes for the train which is now called The Crescent(again)in a current post called "RR history".

Anyone know the engine numbers of train #20 today?...well If anyone finds out what the engine numbers were, if they could let me know, id apprechiate it.

Thanks! :D

With thanks to On Track On Line, I can tell you that the lead unit was Engine #59, which sustained heavy damage. It was in fact removed from the consist to VRE's Broad Run Storage yard. A VRE engine was used to tow #59 into that yard.

The second engine was #72, which after a seven hour delay (based upon what little info is available), then pulled the train into the Alexandria station at 4:38 PM. One report even says that the entire train was discharged at this station, although no reason is given and this is not confirmed.

You can check out some pictures of the wreck here from NBC 4.

That is not true, but the train did come in on track 1 (generally freight only, farthest from the station), stopped short of the station, then had to inch in bit by bit to get people off through the gate in the fence. Whomever said the train was fully discharged was probably confused when they saw disgruntled passengers jumping ship at the first station...

In this photo, track 1 is to the left of the fence, for those who aren't familiar with Alexandria:

Prince William County police said the driver, Richard McNamara, 36, of Manassas, apparently was turning around to leave a construction site at the end of Milford Road when the train hit the passenger side of the truck's cab about 9:40 a.m. Police estimated the train's speed at more than 75 mph and said the train pushed the truck about a half-mile before stopping.
Still another article that better describes some of the incident and including a picture, from the Washington Post.

Thanks for the links AlanB. It looks like 59 is just going to need some new wire and a new noise cone, very similar to what #202 just had done.

Here's a shot of 59 pre damge back in June. You know 58 should be fearful, 57's had a grade crossing incident (Palmetto bug mid-August United, FL) and now 59.
