A fascinating account of train travel and the conference. I think I rode in the Elliston sleeping car during my Canadian Rail pass trip in 1984.
It was a fascinating trip. I turned up a few more slides from the segment between Montreal and Winnipeg.

VIA had a pile of these E-series Pullman Standard 8-4-4's, transferred from CN. I've been on 4 in total and had the Ellerslie and Ethelbert bad-ordered mid-trip. Much like Amtrak with 10-6's they chose to keep quantity of similar models over quality of less ubiquitous models.

In 1978 they had 52 of them. In 1983 there were 51. It was always fun getting out the old Official Guide to look up place names.
