Bumping the thread:

Amtrak priority notwithstanding, is there a priority order for the different types of freight trains?    Whether it's a mixed-freight manifest train, a unit train or intermodal train, which type gets priority?

As an example, I live close to a marine terminal, where large cargo ships bring in or take out containers which get hauled by intermodal NS trains and semi-trucks.

MODERATOR NOTE:  This post was split from another thread.

Typically, an intermodal or mail train will receive priority but it largely depends on the contract. An example in the east is the former Tropicana Juice train.  When it ran as a solid train, it was the hottest train on the rails from Florida to New Jersey. That is because of the contract around the commodity.  Some oil trains have priority. Typically, manifest trains are among the lower end of the spectrum.

Of course, a train with a crew on short time becomes fairly hot as they attempt to get it to the crew change location.

by rule no one has priority , unless Amtrak is willing to pay the loss on a multi million intermodal  or unit coal train .

since amtrak is not willing to offset economic loss of track owner they will not see a priority.

I believe you missed the point of his new post, Dutch. He's talking about type of freight priority

This probably should have been asked in the Freight forum.
