With all the talk on this thread and others regarding the possibility of lie-flat seating on future Amtrak overnight trains, it is a stroke of good luck that YouTube channel Superalbs Travels
recently posted a video about VY's new PlusNight service railcars, between the Norwegian cities of Oslo and Bergen, featuring lie-flat seating.
A few facts-
-The journey is 303 miles long and takes 7 hours and 27 minutes, for an average speed of 41 mph.
-The reviewer paid $94.90 for the lie-flat seat, and makes mention of Norway's high cost of living. Whether that is reflected in the price of the seat or whether subsidies significantly offset the real cost, I have no idea.
-In addition to the lie-flats, the train has standard sleeping compartments, which can accommodate up to six.
-There is a café on-board, but meals are not included in the fare for either the lie-flats or the compartments. If one wishes to grab a meal before departure, there is a discount for a meal - 15 percent discount at a gastropub in Oslo, 25 percent at two locations in Bergen.
For breakfast the next morning, one can purchase a light breakfast in the café car, or a buffet breakfast is available for purchase at a designated hotel at both termini for $18.14. In Oslo, one can purchase breakfast and a shower for $26.98.
-From VY's website
(I converted the measurements from metric) "Seats are the following dimensions when laid completely flat: length 80 inches (6ft. 8in.). (That measurement likely includes the foot well
.) The width at the shoulder is 25.5 inches (2ft. 1 1/2 in.), and the chair is 32 inches (2ft. 8in.) at its widest."
Compare that to the mattresses in the compartments
Lower Tier bunk - 71 1/4 inches (5ft. 11 1/4 in.) by 26 3/4 inches (2ft. 2 3/4 in.)
Mid Tier Bunk - 70 inches (5 ft. 10 in.) by 24 inches (2ft.)
Upper Tier Bunk - 68 1/2 inches (5ft. 8 1/2 inches) by 24 3/4 inches (2ft. 3/4 in.)
-On the PlusNight railcar, the lie-flats are set up in a 1 X 1 configuration, with 23 total per car.
-Each lie-flat passenger receives a free night-time amenity pack including a simple blanket, earplugs and eye mask.
- Each lie-flat pod has a power socket and a dual USB outlet, a small table, and a reading lamp; WiFi is free.
