Did you take Kalka-Shimla train to visit Shimla? It is a UNESCO World Heritage listed under ''Mountain Railways of India” category.
I tried to join Indiamike forum once, but the site was down.
Most trains have started running. Even the most crowded ones. The Shimla-Kalka train is running too.

I did take the trip to Shimla, first time in 1983. We went on by bus to Kulu and Manali. Very few cars on the road in those days, I gather it is very changed now.

It has been changed dramatically. There is a four lane road (it is still being constructing at some places) connecting Chandigarh to Kullu and Manali. Earlier the government was even planning to construct railway line on this route (Chandigarh-Manali-Ladakh), but the plan has been abandoned for now.

My first visit to India was in 1983, we travelled to Himachal Pradesh then as part of a 5 month tour. My recent visits have not been back to the area, except to Shimla.
I started writing a revue of my first visit, which includes Himachal Pradesh... It is spread over several "pages", with other Indiamike members comments interspersed. :
