How does someone go about becoming an engineer?

Well the big thin is getting hired first. :lol: Amtrak does have a Engineer training school, but they try to avoid using it by hiring Engineers that are already Class I certified. Now where do they get Engineers already certified? Freight companies. All of the major freight companies (CSX, NS, BNSF, UP, etc.) operate their own Engineer school. Usually they look to hire within the company (usually Conductors or Brake Men), but ocasionally they will hire from outside the company.
