LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A commuter train slammed into a car at a crossing in front of the University of Southern California on Saturday, seriously injuring the driver and the train's operator. Nineteen passengers on the train suffered lesser injuries.

The train was heading east toward downtown shortly before 11 a.m. when authorities said it appeared the car's driver didn't see it and tried to make a left turn across the tracks from a major thoroughfare.

The car, a silver Hyundai, was all but demolished. The first two of the train's four cars slightly derailed, but they remained upright....

It was a Metro Los Angeles Expo line light rail train, not a commuter train. Also incredibly ironic:

So looking at what the article says, the posted photo, and Google Maps Satellite view, I guess the car and the train were both eastbound with the train behind the car when the driver started his left hand turn.

But, the driver never checked to see if a train was coming before turning onto the tracks.

Unless the traffic signal wasn't working properly, he would have gone through a red arrow (there's also a flashing "TRAIN" indicator, but the red arrow is the official device).
