I've been there several times at LAUS (Los Angeles Union Station). Stubbed lines is a "pain in the butts" during rush hour traffic. Sometimes the incoming trains have to wait on the mainline for the next available line and/or traffic jam area.

During the Amtrak freight cars era, one Southwest Chief is using two lines- one for the passengers and other line for the freights. The passenger section has to pull forward to pass the switch, turn the switch, and back-up to connect the freight cars and then pull forward again. It takes about 10-20 minutes. Waste of time!

Hopefully, the project will reduce the traffic time.
