About 10 days ago I needed to travel from New York Penn Station to Mansfield, MA. MBTA's Providence line made it easy. The line actually runs between Wickford Junction, RI to South Station Boston with a branch to Stoughton. In Rhode Island the train also stops at Theodore Francis Greene Airport in the Hillsgrove section of Warwick, Providence and Pawtucket/Central Falls. It then makes all local stops to South Station. The first train was 10 minutes late; retrurning it was right on time. At Providence tickets are sold at Cafe La France; however the Cafe seems to close about 2:30 in the afternoon. Aside from that the train is convenient for Rhode Islanders. And people in Massachusetts who want to use the TF Greene Airport will also find it convenient.
Service south of Providence is limited.
RIPTA bus no 66 connects Wickford Junction with URI and Kingston Amtrak Station.

The MBTA Providence line runs well.

The biggest wart is the South Attleboro Station which opened in 1990 and was deemed unsafe 2 years ago.

With the opening of the new Pawtucket/Central Falls station, I see no valid reason to rebuild South Attleboro except it has parking.

The bigger question is how a station could be condemned after only 31 years

One drawback is service to TF Green (and Wickford Jct.) only runs on weekdays. Apparently it is set up more for commuters than for travelers wishing to get to/from the airport.

My son and DIL recently moved to Warwick RI so I am hoping to get a chance to check out the service to TF Green sometime soon.

At present South Attleboro isn't even on the schedule. It seems to have been abandoned because of the Pawtucket / Central Falls station.

You're right about the lack of service south of Providence on the weekends. I think you're correct that the service is for commuters. But why should people who want to get to the airport from the Wickford Junction area be excluded? And for that matter why should people who fly in our out on the weekend and need to get to Providence or Boston or some place in between be excluded? The best I can say is half a loaf is better than none.
