From a press release:

Siemens Mobility has been awarded $3.4 billion in contracts in the United States to design, manufacture and technically support 73 multi-powered trains for Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corporation which has transformed transportation by modernizing rail travel in the United States for the past 50 years. There is also a possibility for up to 140 additional trains and maintenance agreements. The order is the Railroad’s latest endeavor to acquire the most sustainable and efficient trains on the market, which include dual powered and hybrid battery vehicles.

Sometimes the reactions of old time railfans to almost anything new reminds me of how much I enjoy watching Downton Abbey :D

Anyway here is an article from Railway Age on how Lithium batteries using less pyrotechnics prone chemistry are already being used in railroad application even as some old timers have conniptions about it ;)

The backup battery that I have installed with my Solar setup also uses a less fire prone Lithium chemistry battery - LFP. They exist and are all getting better each year.

jis I hope you are right but until a large beta test is done we need to be careful. After seeing what Li has done to at least 4 aircraft Li needs more work.
Having 2 fail close to being a fire I take very careful care using and charging them. A fire resistant charging area saved my bacon.
