A delegation of Bangladesh Railway (BR) will visit India this month to discuss preparations for introducing a passenger train service between Dhaka and Siliguri, officials said.
Currently international rail passenger service between the two countries is suspended. Presumably this new train will start operating when that ban is lifted. There may be a ceremonial single run on 26th March if such ban is not lifted by then.
New Jalpaiguir/Siliguri is the starting point of the world famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, just to orient those that are unfamiliar.
Before independence Darjeeling Mail between Calcutta (Sealdah) and Siliguri traveled through Chilahati/Haldibari, as that was the main line connecting Calcutta to North Bengal. The current Darjeeling Mail runs through India on a fully electrified route to New Jalpaiguri.
