Newbie to train travel

Aloha,
As mentioned I'm new to train travel but very excited to finally experience it!
We (2 persons) are coming from Hawaii and we would love suggestions on a trip - maybe 7 - 10 days (less is just fine too as it is our first time).
As this may be our first and last time on a train I'd very much like to make it a memorable one.
I look forward to hearing all of your recommendations - suggestions!

The first question would be where are you arriving on the 48 states? That would open the doors to suggestions as there are regulars here with quite a bit of travel under their belts.

Since you'll have to fly at least to the West Coast anyway, forget Amtrak. Fly to Vancouver and take VIA's Canadian.

It is far and away the best long distance train in North America.
