I was surprised yesterday to find no food/beverage options for coach passengers on the LSL from NYP to ALB. Amtrak website states that coach passengers can purchase meals from the diner car on long distance trains, but we were prohibited from accessing the dining car unless we were traveling in a sleeper. Does anyone have more info to share about this? Have we missed something?

I'd have t look ... but does the website say you coach can purchase from the "diner" car or the "lounge/cafe" car? There is a difference.

"Dining Car
Most long-distance trains include a dining car serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. All meals for passengers with sleeping accommodations are included in the price of the train ticket. Coach class passengers may dine for an additional charge. Hours of operation of food service cars vary, so check when you get onboard. Credit cards (Mastercard, American Express, Visa and Discover) are accepted for payment in dining cars on all trains that offer food service."

Just saw that the LSL is not part of the Long Distance Trains anymore, but has its own "sleeping car menu", without options to buy anything except alcoholic beverages for sleeper car passengers. What a shame.

The LSL no longer has a "traditional" dining car and the cafe car is not attached until Albany.

The LSL is also an odd duck in that the cafe/lounge is part of a split BC/Cafe car, and it originates in Boston, it joins the NYP section in Albany. The other single level LD trains out of NYP have the cafe at the start.
