Interesting last couple of days as a majority of Amtrak trains were on time. Must be due to the freight railroads taking Christmas off.

I noticed the same thing.  Christmas appears to have been good to Amtrak's on time performance.

It'll be back to normal.  Remember, it isn't just the railroads that are running light.  More than a few industrial companies have a 1-2 week shutdown at this time as well (e.g. the Newport News Shipyard closes for a spell), and there will also have been some "frontload" from before the period as well.

You are generally correct.  However if you checked the Crescent on Christmas eve and Christmas day they were the latest of any Amtrak train LD or corridor.  In fact Crescents were the only trains more than 1 hour late.  Even the LSL, Capitols, and EBs ran better.  Crescent # 19 is loosing hour or more WASH - CVS, during hose times and yesterday..

Even with limited freight traffic, there are still a lot of single track pockets along the route. That's all it takes!
