On Saturday, July 17th we were waitng for the Southwest Chief to arrive in Albuquerque for our trip to Kansas City. Four hours late (that was good - explained below) and towed by a freight diesel engine from Burlington Northern Santa Fe. How embarrassing! Apparently our engine broke down and BNSF had to send an engine to tow the train. Amtrak had a new engine waiting in ABQ to replace the broken one. It arrived too late for us to have lunch on board but there was good news:
The train was due in to Kansas City at 7:15 the next morning and almost every day for the previous two weeks it was on time or early. That means you have to get up real early in the morning to shower, pack and have breakfast. Moreover, since we wanted to see some of the stuff at the station (museums, etc), it would mean hanging around until 1PM as they don't open until then on Sunday. With the four hour delay, we got a full night's sleep, plenty of time to get ready and a relaxing, leisurely breakfast before arriving five hours late. We even got to see those towns and wheat fields in Kansas that nobody ever sees because the train goes through in the middle of the night. Talk about excitement! Flat, dull fields. So, all in all, it as a great ride.
