These are schedule changes for East coast to Chicago trains that will take place April 29, 2003.

Cardinal

#51 Dep. WAS 12:55 - Arr. CHI 11:05

#50 Dep. CHI 20:15 - Arr. WAS 20:10

Capitol Limited

#29 Dep. WAS 17:20 - Arr. CHI 10:53

#30 Dep. CHI 17:35 - Arr. WAS 12:20

Three Rivers

#41 Dep. NYC 12:15 - Arr. CHI 07:45

#40 Dep. CHI 22:30 - Arr. NYC 20:04

Lake Shore Limited

#49 Dep. NYC 14:50 - Arr. CHI 09:07

(#449 Dep. 11:50 BOS)

#48 Dep. CHI 19:00 - Arr. NYC 13:50

(#448 Arr. BOS 17:10)

Well that's too bad on the Capitol Ltd, as it makes a worse connection with Silver Service there may be more PAX's put on the Cardinal from the south instead.

I don't like the new Capitol Limited schedule as the route through Sandpatch will be done through the late evening Westbound and early morning Eastbound. Also which is interesting is the Southwest Chief no longer has a connection with the Capitol Limited Eastbound. This must mean the Capitol Limted is no longer becoming the Southwest Cheif in Chicago. The only positive note I have about the new Capitol Limited schedule is Boston passengers can now connect to it on Regional #95 and #94.

I don't see how the new schedule will affect passengers comming on the Silver Service. Both #98 and #92 can connect with #29 as pre schedule change. Passengers from #30 will be able to make #91 and #98 (if they want a 10 hour layover).

The Lake Shore schedule is an improvemnt westbound, with the 9 a.m arrival into Chicago. However, Chicago to east coast service will always be weak until there is a diner put on the three rivers.

One benefit of this schedule change, with regard to the Three Rivers and the Capitol Limited, is that the connection in Pittsburgh that was lost with the February 10th change is restored. Big time. The only drawback is that the layovers are now too long, so long that you will hope your first train is running very late.

Eastbound

#30 will arrive PGH 4:15 AM.

#40 will depart PGH 10:00 AM. That means the layover is almost 6 hours. However, six days a week (Sundays excluded), there is an earlier train, #42, which departs PGH at 7:20 AM, thus cutting that layover to about 3 hours.

Westbound

#41 will arrive PGH 10:00 PM.

#29 will depart PGH 1:40 AM, which is a layover of 3 hours 40 minutes.

In my opinion, all of those layover times are a bit long, so let's see how they pan out. I think that connecting passengers will find the long downtime very unpopular, especially in bad weather.

Well keep in mind that trains are usually late, so some of that layover time is likely to be shaved off.

I would guess many of the changes made were because Amtrak's Express business is slowly coming to a close, thus allowing better times for passengers. Hopefully, the new schedules work better for CSX and NS as well.

But, the schedule change is much better for Toledo, OH passengers as the westbound Capital now departs at a reasonable hour (7:01 am) and returns at a reasonable hour (10:45 pm).....

One of my saving graces down here is trains always arrive/depart at rational hours, since this is their initial terminal.
