Does anyone know how it would be to sleep in new orlens station - in the first class lounge? It would be from 4:30 pm until 7am the next morning.

also, is there any food to buy in the station itself? Thanks

The station is not open overnight. It is open from 5am to 11pm.

Honestly, I'd check one of the online hotel sites to get good last minute deals....I know the one that is spelled like hotels, with a dot com somewhere in there has the last minute deal thing. The French Quarter is just a short cab ride away....and the rest would be better.

I slept overnight in the New Orleans train station about a year ago. The Magnolia Room is closed overnight, but if you are at the station by 11, they close the doors and don t reopen them until 5AM.,and they will allow you to overnight. The Sunset came in at 10:30 that night and I had a reservation on the Crescent at 7:20 the next morning, so I really didn't want to bother with a hotel for that short of time. I was in a sleeper on the Crescent,so an overnight sleeping on a chair didn't bother me too much. When the Magnolia Room opened at 5, I moved in there until my departure..and no food is available after 9PM at the station.

If you don't want to pay for overnight lodging, you can take a cab to the casino which is open 24 hours, along with a 24 hour restaurant. You will certainly be safe there, and if you wish to be entertained with a few slots you can do that too.

Also, Cafe du Monde (famous for there doughnut like Bengiet's (sp.?) and coffee is open 24 hours in the French Quarter. Needless to say, plenty of other um.. entertainment places will be open on Bourbon Street... but that may not be your style (it's not mine!).

If you go to hotels.com not only can you get last minute deals, you can enter New Orleans LA Amtrak Station and it will give you the hotels distance from the station. This is very handy, and works for all cities that amtrak serves.

Perhaps you need to look at the crime statistics for the city of New Orleans (it's been named "Murder Capital of the USA) before you expose yourself in a public place. Greyhound shares UPT with Amtrak. There are some pretty unsavory characters roaming around in the middle of the night.

Indeed, the casino is always the safest place in town, as a general rule.

That's pretty much their entire menu right there, but wow, they're fantastic.

Haha, are you being sarcastic or seriously agreeing with me about the casino being safe?

As for the menu... they also sell paper chef hats, and pins, and I think they even sell the coffee mugs so its alot more extensive then one might have thought! :) haha

Absolutely serious. Casinos have enormous private security teams. You might not be aware of them, but they are there, they are watching everything, and they will move at a moment's notice very quickly when needed. If the casino doesn't have a reputation as a no-theft environment, customers won't be willing to travel there with thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, of dollars in cash on their persons.

New Orleans is such a great place....very full of flavor and life. The Quarter area is relatively safe since there are so many people around at any given time....I have been out and about all hours down there and have always felt safe....pre and post Katrina. Just be smart as in any big city. The casino there is alot of fun and even has a hotel connected to it....so you can try and check their rates or lose alot of money and they might comp you a room

You need to eat at Cafe Du Monde (on the corner of Decatur St. and Jackson Square) atleast once for beignets and our good Southern style coffee (with chicory ground right in).

I checked hotels.com for you earlier today....it looks like you can get a nice room in the vicinity for around $68-83 a night. Not sure if that fits the bill, but its a safe place to rest. My advice for you is this: if you aren't as familiar with Nawlins as some are, don't chance it by walking around with a map. Take a cab to and from the station(plenty around). If one word could describe New Orleans it would be FOOD.

MStrain

That's what I thought, and yes thats my thinking as well, I have always felt safe at casinos! In order for rich people to come spend there money, the casinos must provide a very nice environment.

Also, I agree about getting a taxi from the station as well, your best bet for sure. Shame the streetcars don't run past the station.

I cannot see someone who is able to take an inter-city train trip want to sleep overnight (from 4:30PM, no less) in a train station. In this day and age that would be a profoundly dangerous thing to do. Plus, if someone is that short on funds, the journey should not be undertaken in the first place. I also find it difficult to picture people being allowed to sleep all night in the station after staff has secured the doors.

I must conclude that the original post was a joke.

Though you could take a taxi from the station straight over to Canal and Rampart, and then ride the streetcar down Canal from there. Granted, I don't remember the streetcar hours--they're not all night.

I think the streetcar turns left at the waterfront and goes for a ways parallel to the New Orleans Belt Line, as far as Jackson Square (Cafe du Monde) at least. It certainly goes right past Harrah's.

My experience walking through the Quarter in August was that there was a *heavy* police presence at 2am. But that may be only in certain parts (eg, Bourbon St) of the Quarter and not extend all the way down to Jackson Square. I wouldn't chance the Quarter as a whole at that hour. I found the walk along Canal from Harrah's to O'Keefe (Quality Inn & Suites, great value and highly recommended) to be fine, for what that's worth.

NOLA is a great city, but I would not stay in the station overnight or walk around the Quarter overnight with bags and so on looking like an out-of-towner. You'll appear as an easy mark. Even Pre-Katrina locals and veteran visitors would not reccommend that. The Quarter isn't Times Square or Hollywood.

Not a lot of cops around the quarter at 3:30am. Get a hotel room or hang out at the casino and take a cab or public transportation to get there.

Not to be rude, but you have got to be kidding.

I beg to differ, but Memphis has taken the murder capital title. If you want to get the creeps, hang around Memphis Central station at night.
