If the event is at Trinity Site, the Stallion gate (at the north end) may also be open. It's about 16 miles to Trinity. However, there is much less to do in the are as the closest real town would be Socorro. On the other hand, one of the world's best chile burgers is at the Owl Bar & Grill in San Antonio* and there are some sights and a nice mineral museum in Socorro as well as the Very Large Array site to the west of it.

*San Antonio is a TINY place known primarily for the Owl Bar and the fact that Conrad Hilton, founder of Hilton Hotels, was born there. It is NOT the San Antonio of Alamo fame in Texas.

Nearly 50 years ago, while in the service, we had a then-secret project about 3 miles from Trinity. We stayed in Socorro (50 miles away) and stopped at the Owl Bar many times on the way back to our hotel.

White Sands Missile Range is closed to the public except one day a year when the Army runs escorted tours (you drive your own car in a convoy) to Trinity. Eerie place in the middle of nowhere. The only relationship to Alamogordo was that Alamogordo was the closest city (80 miles). It may be the only place the Army runs tours from or they might have entries at the gate nearest Las Cruces or Stallion gate as I mentioned.
