Do the Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle share the same consist between LA and San Antonio? I ask because I've read on various threads that the consist is split so that the SL continues to NOL while the TE continues to CHI.

Is it done in a similar fashion to the Empire Builder and Lakeshore Limited, or is that different?

There are two Texas Eagle cars (train 421/422) (a sleeper and coach) on the rear of the Sunset Limited between LA and San Antonio. The two cars are uncoupled from the eastbound SL in San Antonio and coupled to the TE to continue to Chicago. The SL continues to New Orleans minus the two cars. For westbound trains, the two cars are coupled to the rear of the SL to continue to Los Angeles.

Since the Sunset Limited only operates three days a week, a Chicago/ L.A. Texas Eagle (421/422) only possible on those days. Trains 421/422 distinguish the LA Texas Eagle from the regular Texas Eagle 21/22

As explained, 2 cars are switched between the TE and SL in SAS. Due to the limitations of the reservation system, each “train” must be sold separately.

That is why you see trains 21/22 between CHI and SAS, trains 421/422 between CHI and SAS and LAX, and trains 1/2 between NOL and LAX. Between SAS and LAX, both the complete consist of the SL (trains 1/2) and 1 sleeper and 1 coach from the TE (trains 421/422) are combined on the same train.
