I was driving through Gilman, Il. Timing was perfect. I saw 391 with a sightseer lounge and 6 or 7 coaches. No baggage cars.

Now I want to ride it. Is it normal operating practice to use superliners on 391 and 392?

Something to do with CN imposing rules because of speculated grade-crossing activation issues.
Don’t quote me on this, but somewhere I heard that on parts of the Chicago-Carbondale line, CN imposes an axle count requirement AND requires single level passenger trains to slow to 70 over crossings (and likely their associated circuits). Running enough Superliners gets Amtrak around these restrictions, so that’s why the 390 series trains often get Superliners. That could be fake news, but I remember reading it somewhere. Someone is welcome to confirm or deny me haha.
