I will be departing from Los Angeles on the eastbound Southwest Chief #4.

I will be in a sleeper. I'd like to know if there is separate boarding

for sleeper passengers. Also, the train is scheduled to depart at 6:15pm.

Is dinner served upon departure? How are reservations (if any) taken for

dinner? I'm thinking about the Capitol Limited from Chicago where sleeper

passengers are boarded early and start dinner before the train leaves the

station. Dinner reservations are taken in the lounge in Chicago, but from

what I understand, there is no sleeper lounge in LAUS.

There are meals served upon departure form LA. They use the full meal for that service as well, not the express menu, IINM. There will not be reservations before embarkation. Correct that no lounge of any sort in LA, unless you count Traxx for the CS.

I heard a rumor that a first class lounge will be in LAX by October though.
That rumor's not quite true. But if there's an actual full-scale sleeping car pax lounge by October, I'll mail you $50. I would give more, but I'm a teenager and I don't have money.
Johnny, don't bet with money you don't have!! I will be departing LAUS on August 26th

so it is highly unlikely that it will impact me. Thanks for your responses.

I always thought that the sleeper lounge was at Phillipe! :giggle:

When it gets close to boarding time for #4, I hang out where they are staging the priority boarding. When the Red Caps show up, I just ask them which track and I walk out by myself.

Usually dinner reservations are made shortly after departure. If you have Jeanine, then all bets are off. Last April, Jeanine scheduled the LA departure dinner based on what car you were in. Jeanine will not walk the train to take reservations for any meal. Dinner reservations are made at lunch, and if you skip lunch like I did (I was just plain full!), you will have to track her down to get a time for dinner.

Edit: Added smiles to the Phillipe comment, just in case someone took me serious!

There is no sleeper lounge in LAX but I believe sleeper passengers are called out and taken to the platform in a golf cart. When I did this journey late last year this was done. This is done few minutes before the kindergarten walk starts for general boarding.

Full dinner service out of LAX. I am not sure if they start while train is still boarding but it continues upto the time the train reaches Barstow. I remember having dinner while passing through Cajon Pass. It was winter so it got dark by that time but if you are doing it in summer there will be daylight and it will be beautiful views outside while you eat :)

Reservations are taken on board. Dinner service starts at about Fullerton in my experience.

Anybody can get a redcap to do this. It's nothing special.
I've always made my own way to the platform. So, other than a call for sleeper passengers, I know of no special procedures.

We were out there in March, had a sleeper reserved. There isn't a seperate boarding area for sleeping passengers. I always get RedCap service and there is a specific area to sit to wait for Redcaps. This area is back by the food stores.

On this last trip, when we boarded the train, our attendant said our entire car was assigned dinner at 7pm. I believe on other train trips out of LA, I have been given a choice of meal times.

That's what I do, too. I've taken the SWC from LAX to CHI several times in the past few years and have never heard a clear announcement about what sleeper passengers should do.
