besides various constraints to that actually happening (it may not be feasible or possible) it’s important to remember that Amtrak serves other stations between Orlando and Miami - it’s not just about end to end overnight passengers in sleepers. A more practical approach would be one or both trains splitting at Jacksonville (or possibly Orlando) and one section running the full FEC which would pick up additional stations Amtrak doesn’t serve. Abandoning the stops between Orlando and Miami just to shorten the trip for end to end passengers isn’t really in the spirit of Amtrak’s mission.

. I tend to focus on possibilities of significantly reducing end to end running times rather than on the minutea of what is the maximum speed achieved over a few miles. The latter matters a lot less than the former, unless of course the latter actually changes the former significantly in a favorable way.

Agree. Have you noticed that there have been almost no changes in times on NEC for years.? The only significant time reduction is the CLT <> Raleigh times. However Crescent times were not lowered CLT <> Greensboro times.

Actually, there have been changes during the last couple of years -- it seems like the scheduled times, at least for Washington - New York have slowed down a bit as compared to 10 years ago, though it seems like that's been reversed in the last few months. There was a lot of track work going on, which slows things down. They probably need to put a little redundant capacity on the main NEC spine so that the schedules don't need to be slowed down when they do track work, which they seem to do almost constantly (which is probably a good thing.)

Although the reasons are varied, it seems to me the trip is taking longer. At any rate, anyone that comes aboard with actual railroad experience can't hurt.
