I heard on BBC World Service Radio that up to 40 school children

were killed when a school bus was struck by a train south of

Cairo, Egypt this morning. It was reported that the track gates

were open when the the accident occurred.

This has been extensively reported here. The children were on a school excursion and yes, there were some survivors. The bus driver died. The crossing was manned by a person who fell asleep. Apparently there was no automatic gate technology, it all relied on a person actually opening and shutting gates by hand as required and it just didn't happen. I heard in news reports that the bus was pushed about a kilometre before the train could stop. Terrible.
