Is freight traffic less on weekends and, if so, does it affect the on-time performance of AMTRAK?

Not really, there might be a couple fewer switch jobs and hot intermodals, but other than that it's business as usual for Amtrak. The only significantly lower in number of trains are Commuter operations and NEC trains.

Freight traffic is generally the same all week. Usually it is the cause of most delays for amtrak trains.

Yes weekends are slower it starts to slow down around Thrusday and picks up again on Monday but this time of year were shipping all the X MAS stuff so were in are busy period. After this month we will slow right down untill March a lot less train traffic.

It always seemed that the eastbound Sunset into Orlando was the least late on the Monday evening (scheduled) arrival, having traveled mostly over the pre-weekend and weekend time period, which would suggest at least slightly less freight congestion over the weekend.
