I was in Chicago this past weekend and was wondering what train I saw. We were southbound on Lakeshore Drive Saturday at about 16th St on Saturday morning. The time was about 8:30AM. Off to our right was a train headed southbound running parallel with us. What train would that have been? Was it headed to or away from Union Station.?

It's been a few years since I was in Chicago, but if you were southbound on Lakeshore Drive South, you would have been parallel to the Metra South Shore Line running out of Randolph Street Station. Was it a Metra train?

That would have been 391, The Sulki, if it was an Amtrak you saw. It leaves CUS at 8:15, goes over the high line to the electric line and then heads south to Carbondale. Same route the CONO takes later in the day.
