I believe you mean I-81, not I-87. The Thruway "turns into" 87 at Albany (with I-90 going east to Boston/Mass Pike, and 87 North to Montreal). You'd pick up 81 in Syracuse and 17 down in Binghamton.

What the picture of the WPYRR doesn't show is the separate coach and flatbed car for the Chilkoot Pass hikers ... we were in a completely separate car from the "regular" passengers, probably because the majority of us stunk pretty badly after 4 or 5 days on the trail! Fortunately the RR folks...

rent bikes, ride the trails throughout the city ... climb the climbing wall at REI ... several museums in the downtown area ... visit the zoo (you could ride your bikes there) ...

If you purchase Business Class tickets (such as from Penn Station to Washington DC), are you assigned seats, or is it a cattle call like it is for coach? Just wondering if we'd actually be able to count on sitting together rather than the crapshoot in coach. thanks!!

:lol: I would imagine it's from all the wonderful rain we've had ... Amtrak suspended service between Albany and Hudson for a short while on Monday because a portion of the tracks were flooded.

The Alaska RR station at the ANC airport is only for cruise line passengers who have booked a land-sea tour. If you've flown into ANC on your own, then you've got to find another way to the ARR depot.
