    What's Changed - 2018 to now

My last major cross country trips on Amtrak were in 2018, and I haven't kept up with the forum. I've seen changes mentioned but am not sure what all is different like food and dining cars and such. I'm going rail pass, not sleepers cars. I'll be travelling: 20 Crescent, New Orleans to DC 125...

advice on taking beer on long distance routes

I only glanced at the topic briefly and thought you needed help bringing your bear on board. I'd recommend getting a sleeper for him and packing spare honey.

Why do you travel by train?

    - I have always liked trains and have a feeling of nostalgia on them - I enjoy engaging in conversation with others in the lounge car. It's a great chance to learn about different people, cultures and ways of life - I am tired of queueing in airport security checks - The unexpected events make...

Seattle trip planning, need a few suggestions

Have you looked at AirBNB options or Priceline? I recently paid $85/night ($101 with tax) on Priceline for Renaissance Seattle Hotel which is downtown between 5th and 6th and walking distance to light rail stops. I paid $3.99 to Uber from there to the Amtrak station on my morning of travel...

Any Experience with New Zealand and KiwiRail?

Sorry I missed this thread earlier. It's been a really tough year for KiwiRail. I rode the Coastal Pacific last year about a week before the earthquake took out the lines. See http://badskirt.blogspot.com/2016/11/the-train-through-kaikoura.html This year, the TranzAlpine has been affected by...

    Moving around the train.......

This qualifies as an emergency, I suppose, but we were asked to remain seated while the coroner investigated a trespasser strike. Everyone in the lounge had to return to their coach or sleeper. No one was permitted to move.

    LAX Weekend Trips

Yes. That's the one. Our ~9pm arrival into LAX came in at 3:10am. The coast section was completely under starlight. I'll definitely have to do this again with the aim to see the coast in daylight.

    LAX Weekend Trips

I'm definitely getting my money's worth on this one. We're running about five hours late presumably for weather.

    LAX Weekend Trips

Thanks everyone. For the long weekend, I went ahead and booked SEA->LAX, assuming the weather gods participate. On the shorter weekends, I'll definitely try your suggestions! much appreciated

    LAX Weekend Trips

Hello - I've recently relocated to LA and wondered what are some of your favorite weekend /long weekend train excursions. I'm looking for ideas for heading out Friday PM/Saturday AM and returning at the end of the weekend Sunday PM/Monday AM (or add an extra day for long holidays!!) I've...

    Hello from another rail fan

I thought I'd take a minute to say hello and introduce myself. I'm Amy, just returned to the US after living overseas for 12 years. I've been using the rails to catch up with friends and explore before settling back into work. I've always loved trains since my youth, but that was fairly limited...
