We took the SWC a couple of weeks ago from Chicago to LA. They offered hot prepared meals for both lunch and dinner on the second day to all non-sleeping car passengers. I think the price was $12 for lunch and $14 for dinner. I forget what lunch was but the dinner was Salisbury steak that...
We took the SWC on Wednesday August 1st. We had a bedroom suite in rooms D and E. It was a good trip but there was a sewage smell that would come and go during the whole trip. I told the SCA and he said that he had already informed the conductor. It really made an otherwise good trip...
The site below has a series of Amtrak podcasts but the Chicago to LA options mostly seem to be for the Texas Eagle. Is there is a way to just get the "best of" podcasts for the SWC?

We are taking the SWC from Chicago to LA in early August. According to this site it has been late way more than on time including some really late arrivals. Is there a reason for all of these delays...
We are taking the SWC in early August and Amtrak still has the menu dated 09-17 at their website. Will that change before August or probably stay the same?

Thanks!
My metra train goes by that area every day at that time. There were 4 or 5 Chicago police cars driving rapidly around the Amtrak facility with their lights flashing so it might be a criminal matter rather than an accident. As of now there have been no updates.
The FB is good for a family your size. You can use the unused top kids bunk to store your gear and the bottom for naps. That said there will not be a whole lot of room for a small child to run around but it will be better than a roomette. We had a FB on the CZ from Chicago to SF and had the...
I see those old time train cars every weekday on my metra ride to and from downtown Chicago (metra tracks are on far side of the field). Are those cars all owned by Amtrak? How are they reserved?
Hello all! Great forum!
We had a family bedroom on the CZ from CHI to SF a few years ago and other than a few hiccups (5 hours late and running out of pretty much every menu item) we really enjoyed it. Since then we have been slowly but steadily accumulating AGR points hoping to use them for...
All the seats in the SC were taken the last time we took the CZ except for two together that had a small notebook and an empty drink on the small table next to the seats. We sat there and over an hour later a coach passenger showed up, grabbed her notebook, and mumbled about how she had been...
I have 70K AGR points I was saving for a trip on the SWC in summer of 2018. I'm wondering if I should bump that date up. Do these long distance trains lose that much money?
There is a full service fairly upscale grocery store called Mariano's around a 1/2 mile from the Union Station in Greektown. They will have all of that and much more.
My family rode the westbound CZ out of Chicago two summers ago. I brought a foldable cooler with ice and around 15 microbrews. The attendant did give me a couple of small buckets of ice over the course of the trip but by the last day the remaining contents were warm. The train was running a...
