    Maple Leaf Business Class discussion

We were on the ML last week—#63(3)—in business class. The Amtrak Cafe attendant was welcoming and helpful. Unlimited soft beverages. When the general announcement was made that the cafe car would be shutting down for the border crossing he poked his head into BC and said we could still get...

    Typical Canadian consist in mid-April?

I cannot speak to next April but below is a photo (taken at the Jasper station of last Wednesday‘s consist (#1(10/4)). All of the Sleeper Plus sleepers were Manors (including the crew sleeper marked “Not In Service”). Prestige sleepers were Chateaus Dollard and Salaberry. Observation was Prince...

    Prestige Class carry-on space

I would like to expand on my last post. In addition to the stairway railings there are five footlights (2 on the right and 3 on the left) that are left on. They are the very base of some of the seats along the aisle to illuminate the depressed walkway. The 24 lights in the headliner of the dome...

    Prestige Class carry-on space

I saw that and it is not true—at least on #1(10/4). We are on that train now (just arriving in Edmonton) and the lights in the dome are off. The lucite stair rails are lit but that’s it.

    Prestige Class carry-on space

Good so far. The accommodation is first rate and very well maintained—I believe Prestige is in its 8th year but the compartments look brand new. Park car is similarly beautifully restored and well maintained. The views from the domes (we’ve got four: coach, sleepers (2) and prestige...

    Prestige Class carry-on space

We are in the Canadian as I write this so I can now answer my own questions for the benefit of other Prestige riders. Although I didn’t bring a ruler the height of the under sofa space appears to be about 8.5” and extends under both sides of the L-shaped sofa. If your airline carry-on sized bag...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

We rode #20(1) from GRO to NYP yesterday. It had 2 VL1s (toilets in the roomettes and one VL2 (common toilet for roomettes down the hall) which I believe was a baggage dorm (beyond the roomettes and toilets and shower was a door marked “crew only”.

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Thanks. It certainly sounds like a GPS issue. The Dixieland status had nothing in the way of times for any of the stations after TCA until the train reappeared at CLT. Oddly, asm.transitdocs.com and Amtrak itself still have nothing. Sounds a bit like Charlie on the MTA.

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

What happened to the Crescent? #20(2) isn’t on the status maps and I couldn’t find any notices on the Amtrak—granted their search feature isn’t always the best.

    VIA Canadian and the Canadians

greatwestern many thanks for the information. That enabled me to look the derailment up online and learn, much to my relief, that the track was reopened “early Thursday after track repairs and safety inspections.” it looks like our trip on #1 departing on 10/4 should be unaffected.

Scanners, Radio and other such tech inquiries

Almost any dual band HT will have receive coverage for AAR frequencies which are just below the 162 MHz NOAA weather channels

    VIA Canadian and the Canadians

Does anyone know what happened to Via #1 (9/27)? It lost over six hours between Washago and Parry Sound (62 miles) and more than 12 hours since departing Toronto (427 miles). I know that its timekeeping record is notoriously poor but this seems a bit unusual even for the Canadian. Full...

    NB Maple Leaf Delay

Anyone know what happened to todays (8/8/23) NB Maple Leaf (#63)? It took 3’26” to go the 14 miles from NYP to Yonkers.

    Acela 21 (Avelia Liberty) development, testing and deployment (2018 - 1Q 2024)

Out of curiosity, are the US crashworthiness standards that much more onerous than those in Europe? I often see those stamdards cited as one of the reasons why Amtrak cannot buy train sets that are closer to their off the shelf European counterparts. One would think that, given Europe‘s...

    Rude Amtrak employees

I certainly agree with the benefits of good supervision though I was speaking to rudeness as opposed to laziness
