    Things looking pretty bad

I was on board this train. About everything that could go wrong did, some Amtrak problems, some not. First we had a medical emergency before we left Chicago in my sleeping car. That put us about an hour late. Then we had power problems, the lead engine 194, died overnight in Kansas...

Amtrak over formerly freight only routes....

The Cardinal through Indiana runs on several long time freight only lines. The B&O Indianapolis to Cincinnati lost its passengers in the early 1900's The Peoria and Eastern railroad Indianpolis to Crawfordsville losts its passenger trains in the 1950's The Monon Crawfordsville to Dyer lost...

    Texas Eagle - Cardinal Connection

I've made this connection several times with the TE/Cardinal or Hoosier State. And most of the time they do make the connetion ok. The one time they didn't, they pulled us off in St Louis and Bused us to Indianapolis to make the connection. I was only go as far as Indianapolis anyway. We...

    Indianapolis Amtrak station

Indianapolis Union Stations Amtrak facility is not that great. It's in what used to be the baggage room of the depot. There are some of the orginal wooden benchs they moved from the main depot, however they're in pretty rough shape now..and thats really ashame. Greyhound does share it, but it...

Amtrak Posts 18th Consecutive Month of Ridership Gains

This is one Train that I wish Amtrak itself, would take more under its wing, and not require State money for upgrades. As stated, this train does good numbers, with zero amenities. Amtrak "needs" this train as long as Beech Grove is during work. Just think what it would do, with a lounge, or...

    Amtrak Outlets

The are 120 volt single phase household outlets. 3 prong. Most folks will bring a power strip along. I recommend one with a long and a short cord. I was in a bedroom that the over the shoulder outlet by the window did not work, so I had to use the outlet by the sink. Thankfully I had a long...

    Roomette Allocation

This is how I got my bedroom numbers for a SWC, CSL, trip I booked last July for June of this year. E for the SWC and D on the CSL. Julie does a good job when you ask for "more details" and she will give you up to date train times. And of course you can ask her to repeat anything you might miss.

Least scenic Amtrak route/section of route?

My family was on the Southwest Chief a couple of years ago. When we woke up my 8 year old son looks out the window, and ask's "Dad where are we"? I said In western Kansas, maybe east Colorado. He looks back and me, and says. "Looks like we're in the middle of no where to me"! I still chuckle...

    Hoosier State

The Hoosier State generally operates with two Horizon coaches. As of late, they've been adding a lounge (but don't count on this). And on occasion a third Horizon or Amfleet coach. There is no checked baggage. Plan on bringing some snacks and something to drink in case the lounge is not on...

    Following the Anniversary Engines

Found this video with two of the Anniversary museum cars on the Hoosier State. The cars are on the back of the train, so be sure to watch the whole video.

    Presentation on Amtrak

Are the Dorm cars stored at Bear or Beech Grove? And any idea of which shop will restore them? And how did they find the funding to do this?

    Following the Anniversary Engines

The Baggage car is actually a buffer car. It's empty and the doors are welded shut...they use it between the single level and they Superliner cars when the are moving the Superliners to and from Chicago from Beech Grove. I guess you could call it a rolling museum. It never was repainted into...
