    Coast Starlight discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Thanks to all here, after joining the forum I’ve learned a LOT about schedules, consists and other subjects to help me with a planned LD trip on the Coastal Starlight from LA/SEA. Unfortunately after trying to plan this trip 4-5 (Feb/Mar 24) months out on a empty train, not being able to...

I think I’m in the same boat as you, want to book a CS trip the whole way north in February but really want to be on the coastal side in a bedroom!

Amtrak announces Simplified Fares coming soon

Been looking at a next February TX-LA followed by an LA-SEA trip in the same week and getting in an anniversary double overnighter in a bedroom trip, prices just went up a couple hundred bucks!😩

    Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle discussion

I researched all that great info yesterday about the SMC station. So yes, we’d be dropped off with all our bags with the possibility of sitting around for however long it would take for the train to arrive, and it could be iffy weather in late February. But I reckon waiting around at 7pm might...

    Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle discussion

I think I MAY have figured out the same route but a more favorable train boarding time!? If I get to San Marcos at train time ≈7pm, that is WAY more favorable than 2:45AM in San Antonio….we’re an hour out from SA and it’s only 30 minutes more to San Marcos. Then we’re in our bedroom at a...

    Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle discussion

😳 This is good info! We’ll see if anyone else chimes in on this great idea! I just checked with online Amtrak booking and it does give 2 options to get to SEA from SA..the Eagle AND the Limited. I’ll call and see if they let LA passengers with rooms board as early as 9-10! Thanks! Although you...

    Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle discussion

I’m still researching and trying to find the lowest fare for a vacation the end of February 2024, starting in San Antonio and ending up in Seattle. Probably get a bedroom in both trains and it’s looking like around $2500 at this point for 2 seniors. I figure I have enough time to keep checking...

Coast Starlight or Sunset Limited for our next trip?

Going west on both sounds like a fun idea! Although we’re near SA and getting on at 2:45A sounds bad, I guess you could just crash into your room. Hopefully the train wouldn’t get into LA too late to miss a meal at Philippes-Great suggestion!

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Pardon my ignorance, but AGR is? Amtrak Guest Rewards? So, join up, buy my tix and then keep checking rates and if they go down, then being a member allows me to request the new rate and get a refund, or will they automatically modify my resv? From your numbers it sounds like $1240 for 2 is...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

I’ve been checking monthly a Coastal trip from LA-Sea in Feb 2024 for an anniversary thing. Lowest bedroom fares are currently like $1240. I haven’t decided what the highest I’ll pay is before I just say “nope”! I guess if there’s a possibility it can fall below a grand I’ll think about it...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

This is interesting! I looked into Feb of next year (anniversary-2 seniors) for a bedroom on the Coastal Starlight, two weeks ago it was in the $1400’s, yesterday it was $1240. Does the day of the week make a difference too?

    Coast Starlight discussion

I’m hoping to book the whole Coast Starlight trip out of LA next February for an anniversary. I’ll get a bedroom, and current schedules show 0% booked this far out (pricey but when else are you gonna do it!). Is there any way to determine side of the train you’re booking on going north? Seems...

    Newbie in TX

Made a few trips by train as a kid including one memorable one thru communist East Berlin to get into West Berlin and recently got back into it with an Albuquerque to Flagstaff journey to the Grand Canyon with friends from Santa Fe. Ridden most all the big steam trains and am planning an...
