I have seen a tour group utilize the Zephyr to go from Chicago to Salt Lake City for some sort of national parks trip. Also there's the standard groups of Amish & Mennonites that appear on the Zephyr & Chief, not nearly large enough for their own car though.

Ill tell you it was nice to see but painful to have to ride by it, next time im def flying and renting a car so I can dip my feet in.

On the NB Coast Starlight right now, crew just got called into a meeting, seems like they're flying home to LA so im guessing Thurs. onwards is cancelled, which seems to line up with the news here.

Thank you for the suggestion! I thought that the majority of the good ocean views were north of Santa Barbara, but if portion north of SB can be skipped, that does make a northbound journey much more possible, good to know!

Does anyone know if Viewliner II's are now the only sleeping cars on the NYC portion of the LSL now, or is it still one VI & one VII? Is there any way to request a VII when booking online, or do you have to call an agent?

right but i remember the last time i rode almost a decade ago there was a distant view of the snowshed/chinese wall from lower down but couldnt remember which side the volunteer pointed.

Another quick question on the Zephyr, going westbound, which side of the train provides the best view of the abandoned track 1, with the snowsheds, and fire watch shelter, etc? Thanks!

heh, good suggestion if i ever get the itch to travel long distance on amtrak again, which might be a while given the financial and service landscape amtrak is presenting in the near future.

I am on the 5 which has been delayed more than an hour and counting before even reaching Naperville. No sightseeer lounge. And the power just cut off. I can tell this trip is going to be grreeeaaaattt....
